    • This invention relates to a non-intrusive speech quality assessment system. The invention provides a method and apparatus for storing a sequence of intercepted packets associated with a call, each packet containing speech data, and an indication of a transmission time of said packet; storing with each intercepted packet an indication of an intercept time of said packet; extracting a set of parameters from said sequence of packets; and generating an estimated mean opinion score in dependence upon said set of parameters; wherein the extracting step comprises the sub steps of: generating a jitter parameter for each of a sequence of stored packets in dependence upon the difference between the transmission time of a stored packet and the transmission time of a preceding stored packet of the sequence; and the difference between the intercept time of said stored packet and the intercept time of said preceding packet; and generating a consecutive positive jitter parameter for said stored packet in dependence upon the polarity of said jitter parameter for said stored packet and the polarity of said jitter parameter for any preceding stored packets.

    • This invention relates to a method and apparatus for filtering network packets (12). The method comprises a method of filtering a packet (12) in a packet switched network in which two complementary packets (12,14) are transmitted in opposite directions between a particular source and a particular destination comprising the steps of: a) selecting a complementary portion of the source and destination address of said packet (40); b) performing a commutative operation on said complementary portion (42); and c) processing or discarding the packet in dependence upon the results of said commutative operation (48).

    • The present invention relates to detection of echo in telecommunications networks. The invention provides a method of echo detection comprising the steps of: generating a series of inbound vectors for an inbound signal; generating a series of outbound vectors for an outbound signal; repeating a predetermined number of comparison steps comprising the sub-steps of selecting an outbound vector from the outbound vectors; selecting an inbound vector from the inbound vectors; comparing said outbound vector with said inbound vector and with successive inbound vectors to generate a plurality of similarity metrics; and determining a relative position of the compared outbound vector having maximum correlation with said inbound vector; and counting the number of times each relative position is determined to be the position of maximum correlation.
