    • An expandable compression ring (10) for compressing a gasket (20) into sealing engagement with a wall (21) of an opening (22) is disclosed. Compression ring (10) includes a continuous strip (11) of resiliently flexible material and first (12) and second (14) molded members that are attached to first and second ends of strip (11). Strip (11) may be made of either metal or plastic. For a metal strip (36), rivets (34) may be used to attach first (30) and second (46) molded members to respective first (35) and second (49) ends of strip (36). For a plastic strip (72), first (68) and second (70) molded members may be respectively attached to first (83) and second (85) ends of strip (72) via mortises (78) and (80) formed in respective first (68) and second (70) molded members and tenons (82) and (84) formed on respective first (83) and second (85) ends of strip (72). Installation lugs (26) formed on first (12) and second (14) molded members cooperate with a force exerting structure to move strip (11) into at least one expanded position. Members (12) and (14) each include a plurality of teeth that mesh with the teeth of the other member to lock strip (11) in the expanded position. Sets of first (226) and second (230) molded members may be used to join a plurality of strips (224) to accommodate a wider range of opening (22) diameters that can be accommodated with only one set of molded members (226) and (230) and one strip (224). Alternately, only one pair of first (226) and second (230) molded members may be used with other aligning and securing structure to join a plurality of strips (224).

    • An arrangement is disclosed for radially expanding a tubular gasket and including a sliding sleeve and a compression sleeve. The sliding sleeve is formed of a thin membrane of relatively rigid material, such as nylon, hypalon or polyester. The sliding sleeve is positioned adjacent an inner surface of that portion of the tubular gasket to be expanded and serves as a slip plate for the compression sleeve when the sleeves are expanded against the inner surface of the tubular gasket. The invention relates to the forming of the compression sleeve so as to allow it to be locked in any one of a plurality of expanded positions. The locking mechanism is integrally formed with the compression sleeve.

The locking mechanism may be integrally formed with the compression sleeve, or may be formed as a separate element which may be molded into, or otherwise pre-attached to, the inner surface of the tubular gasket.
