When assuming that a corner portion where a front end face of the insulating member intersects a side surface of an axial hole is referred to as a position PA, a position on a center electrode where a straight-line distance from the position PA to the center electrode within the axial hole is referred to as a position PB, a position where the insulating member first contacts the metal shell from the front end face of the insulating element along a surface of the insulating element is referred to as a position PC, and a position on the insulating element where a straight line BC which connects the position PB with the position PC contacts the surface of the insulating member when the straight line BC is displaced parallel towards an outside of an axis is referred to as a position PD, a parallel displacement amount E by which the straight line BC is displaced parallel until it contacts the position PD is 0.75 mm or larger. According to the spark plug configured in this way, even though the spark plug is shaped small, the occurrence of lateral spark and inside spark can be suppressed effectively.

    • [Objective] To provide a spark plug which is configured such that an insulation member, from which a center electrode projects, is pressed frontward and held in a metallic shell, and is fixed by means of crimping the rear end of the metallic shell, and which can prevent a drop in gastightness between the metallic shell and the insulation member due to a difference in thermal expansion therebetween. [Means for Solution] In a spark plug in which a mating shaft portion (10) of an insulation member (1) is loose-fitted into a mating hole portion (30) of a metallic shell (21), a filler (41) for maintaining gastightness is charged between the outer circumferential surface of the mating shaft portion (10) and the inner circumferential surface of the mating hole portion (30). Despite the thermal expansion difference, the gastightness is maintained, because the filler (41) for maintaining gastightness is charged between the inner and outer circumferential surfaces.

    • Disclosed is a spark plug having an insulator capable of achieving good breakage resistance by modifying the state of contact of the insulator with a plate packing and the like without increase in insulator thickness. A spark plug 1 contains a ceramic insulator 2, a plate packing 22 and a metal shell 3. The ceramic insulator 2 has, on an outer circumferential surface thereof, a step portion 14 having an outer diameter decreasing toward the front in the direction of an axis CL1 and a leg portion 13 extending toward the front in the direction of the axis CL1. The metal shell 3 has, on an inner circumferential surface thereof, a taper portion 21 having an inner diameter decreasing toward the front in the direction of the axis CL1. The ceramic insulator 2 is fixed in the metal shell 3 with the step portion 14 retained on the taper portion 21 via the plate packing 22. The ceramic insulator 2 also has a curved surface portion 31 formed into a concave shape on the outer circumferential surface thereof at a position between the step portion 14 and the leg portion 13. Herein, 50% or more of an inner circumferential edge portion IP of the plate packing 22 in a circumferential direction thereof is in contact with a part of the ceramic insulator 2 located front of a middle region CP of the curved surface portion 31.

    • Provided is a spark plug capable of achieving both of air tightness and high gasket detachment resistance. The spark plug (1) includes a metal shell (3) and a solid annular gasket (18). The metal shell (3) has a mounting male thread portion (15) and a radially outwardly protruding seat portion (16). The gasket (18) is disposed between the male thread portion (15) and the seat portion (16). The gasket (18) has a recessed portion (41) formed with a depth in the direction of an axis (CL1) such that the recessed portion (41) has an opening at a surface of the gasket (18) located opposite to the seat portion (16). The gasket (18) includes an inner peripheral front end surface region (351) formed such that a distance from a reference plane (VS), which passes through a rear end of the recessed portion (41) and extends perpendicular to a center line (CL2) of the gasket (18), to the inner peripheral front end surface region (351) decreases toward an inner periphery of the gasket (18) and an outer peripheral front end surface region (352) formed radially outside the inner peripheral front end surface region (351). The opening of the recessed portion (14) is located radially inside an innermost periphery of the outer peripheral front end surface region (352).

    • To provide a technique capable of firmly holding a ceramic insulator by a crimp portion of a metal shell even though a diameter of a spark plug is reduced in size. A spark plug 100 includes a ceramic insulator 10 having a tapered rear end side step portion 15 whose a diameter tapering from a front end side to a rear end side and a metal shell 50 having a crimp portion 53 which crimps the rear end side step portion 15 from the rear end side. In the spark plug 100, an area S defined by an outer edge of the rear end side step portion 15 and an inner edge of the crimp portion 53 falls within a range of 5 mm 2 to 25 mm 2 when the spark plug 100 is projected on a plane perpendicular to an axial line of the spark plug 100. Further, an angle ¸1 formed by a tapered face of the rear end side step portion 15 and a plane perpendicular to the axial line falls within a range of 20 degrees to 60 degrees. Furthermore, a distance L along the axial line from a front end of a proximal portion of the crimp portion 53 to a frontmost position of a contact portion between an inner face of the crimp portion 53 and the rear end side step portion 15 falls within a range of 0.4 mm to 1.8 mm.
