    • In a method of locating a monetary amount in a binary image, with a binary 1 representing a black pixel and a binary 0 representing a white pixel, an examining window (42) is positioned over a portion of the binary image and a list of objects is generated, with an object being defined as a set of contiguous black pixels. The objects are classified into parts such as characters, dots and commas, depending on predetermined criteria. The classified parts are then examined to determine whether or note they match a sequence which is indicative of a monetary amount. Then, the classified parts are examined to determine whether or not they conform to certain geometric criteria. Thus, a monetary amount is identified without effecting character recognition. The window (42) is moved to a next portion of data, and the process described is repeated.

    • A method and apparatus are described for of processing documents in an image-based document processing system (10) so as to associate recognition results from a primary source results list with corresponding recognition results from a secondary source results list and improve assistance to an operator of the image-based document processing system during its operation. Hence, first and second types of documents are scanned at an image capture workstation (14) to obtain scanned data therefrom, and this scanned data is processed at a recognition workstation (16) to provide recognition results associated with the first and second types of documents. The recognition results associated with the first and second types of documents are stored, respectively, in primary and secondary lists and recognition results from the primary list are compared with recognition results from the secondary list to determined if an exact match occurs, thereby to associate a first set of recognition results from the primary list and a first set of recognition results from the secondary list and, when an exact match fails to occur, the recognition results from the primary and secondary lists are compared to determine if an approximate match occurs, thereby to associate a second set of recognition results from the primary list and a second set of recognition results form the secondary list.
