The system (10) includes a computer (12) which stores a plurality of records for an electronic price label (18) in the data file (28,32), which reads the data file (28,32) to identify all of the records for the electronic price label (18), which determines the priorities in the records, and which displays the messages at start times within the records in accordance with the priorities. The computer (12) records the records in response to operator input and/or inputs received from an application program through an application programming interface (26). For inputs received from application programs, the computer (12) establishes new priorities for the messages based upon different application priorities assigned to the application programs.

摘要： A method of assigning electronic price labels (EPLs) to groups of price look-up file items which is based upon the price change frequencies of the items in the groups. The items are divided into a plurality of groups. Price change frequencies for items within each group are determined. A minimum price change frequency for each group is determined. In a first embodiment, EPLs are assigned to items in any one of the groups only if a predetermined number of the price change frequencies in the one group exceed a predetermined minimum price change frequency for the one group. In a second embodiment, the groups are ranked starting with a first group having a highest number of items that exceed the minimum price change frequency for the first group and ending with a second group having a lowest number of items that exceed the minimum price change frequency for the second group, and EPLs are assigned to a plurality of items less than the totality of items by order of rank of the groups, beginning with the items in the first group, until the plurality of EPLs are exhausted.

摘要： An electronic price label (EPL) support method in which support of an EPL system may be provided by a main computer (12) in a store, a host terminal (13) coupled to the main computer and other main computers in a chain (10) of stores, or a combination of both. The support method includes a method of modifying an EPL system within a transaction establishment. The host computer creates a price look-up (PLU) batch file (52) containing changes to a PLU data file of the store and sends it to the main computer. The main computer applies the PLU batch file. Either the host terminal or main computer provides an EPL batch file (33) for modifying an EPL data file (32) in response to the changes in the PLU data file (44). When provided by the host, the EPL batch file may contain temporary identification numbers for new EPLs. Either the host or main computer may additionally provide overlays (55) for new EPLs, reassigned EPLs, and replacement EPLs.
