摘要： An integral airbag cushion retainer, filter and diffuser (50) for use with an inflator assembly (20) for generating inflation gas, a first filter material (66), a second filter material (70) and an inflatable airbag cushion (42), as part of an inflatable restraint system (10). The integral airbag cushion retainer, filter and diffuser comprises a shaped plate member which has a top panel (54) that joins to an inner filter chamber wall (56) extending to a radially extending airbag cushion retaining ring (58). The shaped plate member fits over and encloses a portion of the inflator assembly comprising a plurality of gas exhaust openings (30), with the retaining ring (58) attaching to the inflator assembly (20), retaining the airbag cushion (42) therebetween in an gastight manner. An inner filter chamber (64), enclosing the gas exhaust openings and retaining the first filter material, is formed by the inflator assembly (20), the top panel (54) and the inner filter chamber wall (56). An outer filter chamber (68), retaining the second filter material (70), is formed by the inner filter chamber wall, the retaining ring (58) and an outer filter chamber wall (72) extending upwardly from the cushion retaining ring to an outer edge (74) of the shaped plate member. The outer edge is either folded or crimped towards the top panel and inner filter chamber wall (56), retaining the second filter material within the outer filter chamber. A plurality of gas port openings (76) in the inner filter chamber wall (56) connect the inner filter chamber to the outer filter chamber, while the outer filter chamber has a gas delivery passage (78) for delivering and diffusing generated gas into the airbag cushion.

摘要： An air bag module suitable for installation in a steering wheel uses a tubular inflator (12) which is mounted off centre in the module. A retainer ring (16) with projecting studs and curved portions, holds a substantially rectangular opening of an air bag (18) against a complementarily curved module housing (14) a flat base member of which includes a hole for accommodating a cylindrical diffuser (26) of the inflator (12). The studs pass through holes in the cushion (18), module housing (14) and a retaining bracket (22) with a curved portion which holds the inflator against the housing (14). A pocket in the retaining bracket accommodates the diffuser and directs inflation gas towards the cushion (18). The module permits a cylindrical inflator (12) with a diffuser projecting therefrom to be installed in a steering wheel (172).

摘要： Cold pressurized pure inert gas (e.g. argon or nitrogen) is delivered to an air bag (1) with the addition of mechanical energy to aid in filling the bag (1) by an inflator (10) comprising a high strength container (12) or bottle having a cylindrical section (16) that is filled with inert gas. A piston (18) is located at one end (20) of the cylindrical section (16) with a high energy pyrotechnic material (24) behind it. Both sides of the piston (18) are at the same pressure during storage. An initiator (26) is located in the high energy pyrotechnic material. A burst disk (32) is located at the opposite end of the cylindrical section (16). When the initiator (26) is fired, the piston (18) is driven down the length of the cylindrical section (16). When the pressure in the container (12) exceeds the burst disk strength, the inert gas expands into the air bag (1) or apparatus needing to be filled.
