    • The invention relates to a surveying pole system comprising a surveying pole, wherein the surveying pole comprises at least two telescopic sections configured for providing a length adjustability of the surveying pole, at a first end of the surveying pole, a pointing tip suitable for being positioned on a target point of the environment, at a second end of the surveying pole, a length reference point, a locking mechanism configured for locking the length adjustability in respective lock-in positions, wherein each of the lock-in positions provides a corresponding distance between the pointing tip and the length reference point, and unlocking the length adjustability, coded identifiers, wherein each of the coded identifiers has a predetermined code and is associated with one of the lock-in positions, a coded-identifier reader configured for, in each of the lock-in positions, reading the code of a respective coded identifier associated with the respective lock-in position, a communication device configured for transmitting a signal to a surveying instrument or to a surveying instrument controller, wherein the signal is based at least on the read code.

    • The invention relates to identification of a target of a geodetic system based on global and local identification references. The target comprises a light emitter (LE) configured for emitting any of n predetermined modulated light patterns (MLPs), being permanently assigned to one of m (m > n) global identification reference (GIR), e.g. a Bluetooth address. The target is configured for transmitting and/or receiving data based on the GIR to which it is assigned. The geodetic system further comprises a geodetic surveying instrument such as a total station comprising an optical sensor (OS) configured for receiving the MLPs and digitizing them by a fast sampling analogue-to-digital converter (ADC). Further, a computing system as part of the geodetic system selects one of the at least one targets or receives a selection of one of the at least one target, the selected target being assigned to a selected GIR. One of n local identification references (LIRs) is temporarily assigned to the selected GIR. The light emitter of the selected target is directed to emit an MLP corresponding with the assigned LIR. Thus, by detection of the assigned LIR, the selected target is identified.
