    • An expansion assembly (10) for a mine roof bolt (12) has a tapered plug (26), two expansion leaves (28) that bear against the tapered plug (26), a bail (30) that connects the expansion leaves (28) and extends over the end of the mine roof bolt (12), and a breakable holding ring (32) to keep the expansion assembly (10) assembled until after it is placed into the bore hole (18). The tapered plug (26) has a threaded bore (36) therethrough for threading onto the mine roof bolt (12). The tapered plug (26) also has tapered surfaces that have an angle of taper of 8° to the axis of the mine roof bolt (12). The expansion leaves (28) each have nine serrations formed on the surface such that the serrations are formed by the intersection of a planar surface (50) perpendicular to the axis of the mine roof bolt (12) and a frusto-conical surface (52). The frusto-conical surface (52) is at an angle of 69° to the planar surface (50). The serrations are equally spaced from each other and have a peak to peak distance of .25". The expansion leaves (28) each have a maximum length of 3". The tapered plug (26) has a relieved upper edge (40) and channels (42) running longitudinally along the outer surfaces of the legs (38) of the plug (26) and the expansion leaves (28) have channels (60) formed near the end of the leaves (28), all for facilitating use of the expansion assembly (10) with resin. The expansion assembly (10) may be utilized with or without resin bonding.

    • A roof anchor (10) for supporting an underground mine roof (12) has an elongated shaft (16) with a head (20) formed at one end. The head (20) supports a washer (23) and a roof supporting plate (24) that surrounds the mouth of a blind bore (14) formed upwardly into the roof. A resin capsule (32) is positioned within the blind bore (14) above the roof anchor (10). The shaft (16) of the roof anchor has an adjustably securable annular washer (26) surrounding the shaft. The annular washer (26) is fixed in a position so that when the resin capsule (32) is ruptured to release the resin to bind the roof anchor (10) within the bore hole, the resin completely fills the bore hole from the blind end of the bore to the rigid annular washer (26) fixed to the shaft of the roof anchor. By making the position of the annular washer axially adjustable, the roof anchor may be utilized with varying amounts of resin as conditions at the mine site require and still cause the resin to be subjected to a compressive force within the bore hole in the space between the end of the bore hole and the annular washer.
