    • A technique for operating an interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG) exploits digital intensity suppression to improve gyro performance. The IFOG [200] includes an optical portion configured to provide an optical signal [102], a photodetector [206] configured to convert the optical signal to a photodctcctor output signal [217] and an electronics portion [207] configured to provide a gyro output [260] based upon the photodetector output signal. The photodetector output signal is quantized [214] to create a digitized representation [241] of the optical signal. An intensity scaling value [245] is determined based upon the digital representation of the optical signal, and the photodetector output signal is adjusted based upon the intensity scaling value to create a scaled photodetector output signal. The digital representation of the optical signal is then digitally reconstructed [248] as a function of the scaled photodetector output signal and the intensity scaling value. From the reconstructed signal, a demodulation technique [250] is applied that removes the intensity-sensitivity while preserving the sensitivity to rotation rate. The gyro output or servo feedback [262] in a closed-loop system is thereby based upon the intensity-suppressed demodulated digital representation of the reconstructed optical signal.

    • Systems and methods for improving efficiency of a data converter. An example method generates a noise signal, alters the spectrum of the noise signal based on operation of an associated data converter, and supplies the altered spectrum noise signal to the associated data converter. The data converter is a digital-to-analog converter or an analog-to-digital converter. The altered spectrum noise signal is notched at frequencies of interest. The spectrum is altered by sending a signal generated by a random number generator to a delay device and adding the output of the delay device from the output of the random number generator. Also, the spectrum is altered by seeding first and second identical random number generators, delaying the operation of the first random number generator, and adding the output of the delayed first random number generator from the second random number generator.
