Due to such a constitution, a moving distance and an impingement speed of the plunger rod 201 can be reduced so that noises can be reduced with high accuracy. Further, by providing the limited current supply period, a heating value and power consumption of the system can be reduced.

    • It is an object of the present invention to eliminate a valve holder and accommodate a valve guide in a small space provided between a valve seat and a peripheral surface part of a pressure chamber to thereby bring a pump into less size. In order to achieve the above object, the valve guide (SG) which guides a stroke of a valve (203) is provided inside the valve seat (214S). Specifically, a valve (203) includes an annular abutting surface (203R) that abuts a valve seat (214S) formed in a valve housing (214) to shut off a fuel intake passage and a bottomed cylindrical part (203F,203H) provided at an inner peripheral part of the annular abutting surface (203R). The bottomed cylindrical part (203F,203H) is inserted into a fuel introduction hole (214P) formed in the valve housing (214) inside the valve seat (214S). A member having a cylindrical surface part which supports a reciprocating motion of the valve (203), is fixed to the valve housing (214), in face-to-face with an inner peripheral part of the bottomed cylindrical part (203F,203H). Thus, the size of the valve guide (SG) that protrudes from the surface of the valve seat (214S) to the pressure chamber side can be shortened. It is therefore possible to bring an inlet valve mechanism portion into less size and eventually render the pump in a small size.

    • In a high pressure fuel supply pump for transmitting rotation of a cam 7 to a reciprocating plunger 2 via a tappet 6 and a retainer 3, a diametric force acting on the plunger 2 is reduced. The high pressure fuel supply pump includes the retainer 3 disposed on the plunger 2 and a return spring 4 exerting an urging force on the retainer 3 in a direction of the tappet 6. A clearance between a plunger leading end 201 and a tappet bottom surface 601 opposed thereto is set to be greater than a clearance between a retainer bottom surface 301 and the tappet bottom surface 602 opposed thereto, and a clearance between a retainer inside diameter section 302 and a plunger peripheral surface section 203 opposed thereto is set to be greater than a clearance between a retainer outside diameter section 303 and a tappet inner wall 603 opposed thereto. The foregoing arrangements make a plunger diametric force involved in flexural deformation or shear deformation of the spring 4 less easy to be transmitted to the plunger 2. As a result, a fault of the plunger 2 galling a cylinder inner wall 2A can be reduced.

    • It is an object of the present invention to improve responsiveness in valve opening and valve closing of an electromagnetically-driven intake valve unit (200) in which a valve (203) is provided on a pressurizing chamber side of a valve seat (214S). The bottomed cylindrical part (203F,203H) is inserted into a fuel introduction hole (214P) formed in the valve housing (214) inside the valve seat (214S), and the outer surface of an end part of the bottomed cylindrical part (203F,203H) is exposed to fuel in a low pressure fuel chamber (10A) provided upstream of the fuel introduction hole (214P). Thus, a low pressure is less produced upstream of the valve seat (214S) and thereby a static or dynamic fluid force of the fluid for biasing the valve (203) toward the valve opening direction is exerted on the entire outer surface of the valve (203), so that it is possible to provide a fast and stable valve opening speed of the valve (203).
