摘要： A screen for reflecting a projected image, in particular to an active screen for reflecting a projected image having improved contrast, and a projection system incorporating such a screen, are provided.
The projection screen (16) for displaying an image (18), comprises an active layer (24) whose optical properties in the visible region of the spectrum can be changed under the influence of an electric field; a first electrode (28) and a second electrode (26) for applying an electric field across the active layer (24), wherein at least one electrode is transparent to allow light incident on the screen (16) to reach the active layer (24); and a photosensitive material (30) whose electrical or dielectric properties can be changed under illumination, wherein the photosensitive material (30) is arranged such that the electric field across a localised region of the active layer (24) is dependent on the illumination incident on the photoconductor in that region, with the result that the optical properties of the projection screen (16) at a point are dependent on the intensity of light incident upon the screen (16) at that point.

摘要： A bistable nematic liquid crystal device includes an array of holes (8) in an alignment layer (6) on at least one cell wall (2). The holes (8) have a shape and/or orientation to induce the liquid crystal director adjacent the holes (8) to adopt two different tilt angles in substantially the same azimuthal direction. The arrangement is such that two stable liquid crystal molecular configurations can exist after suitable electrical signals have been applied to the electrodes.
