    • A low profile, 1.3 form factor, motor driven, hard disk assembly (8) and clamp (12g) includes a disk stack (13) in which a disk is adhesively bonded to each of opposite annular axial surfaces of a spacer ring (13c), the central opening of each disk (13a,13b) leaving an exposed inner annular surface (13c3) of each opposite annular axial surface. The spacer ring is fitted about a tubular hub (12a) of the disk motor rotor (12), one inner annular axial surface (13c3) of the spacer ring (13c) seating upon the shoulder (12a21) on the tubular hub (12a), and the opposite inner annular axial surface (13c3) of the spacer ring being engaged by a clamp (12g) secured to the tubular hub (12a). An annular groove (13c2) in each of the opposite annular axial surfaces (13c1) between the disk and the inner annular portions, isolates clamping stress on the spacer ring (13c) at each inner annular axial surface (13c1) from the adjacent spacer ring annular axial surface (13c1) where the respective disks (13a,13b) are adhesively bonded and also functions to catch adhesive out flow at the disk ring inner face (13c1) during the application of bonding pressure.

    • A rotary actuator disk drive in which the rotary actuator (5) is driven by a motor comprising a movable coil and a stationary permanent magnet structure (5b) producing a magnetic field which links the coil (5b3). The rotary actuator comprises a load beam arm stack (5a) and a voice coil arm (5b1) of electrical insulating material such as a light weight plastic, all of which are axially stacked and swaged to a rotary actuator bearing hub (9a) which is rotatably mounted in the disk drive. The coil arm (5b1) of electrical insulating material has a bobbin section (5b2) on which the coil (5b3) is directly wound. The coil arm (5b1) is molded together with the coil arm mounting bushing (5b10), a latch pin (5b4) of magnetic material and an actuator arm balance weight (5b12) insert molded therein. The latch pin (5b4) is linked by the permanent magnet field of the motor permanent magnet structure (5b) and functions with that structure (5b) to define mechanical limits of angular actuator movement and to magnetically latch the actuator (5) in one angular limit when the disk drive is not in use. Latch release is achieved by subjecting the rotary actuator to several cycles of oscillation at substantially the resonant frequency.

    • A motor driven hard disk assembly for a low- profile, hard disk drive, is mounted upon a base structure (5a) of non-magnetic material. The disk motor (10) is a direct current motor having a salient pole stator (11) mounted on concentric annuli (5a3,5a4) on the innerface (5a1) of the base structure (5a5). A disk motor spindle (5a5) projects from the base structure (5a) at the center of the concentric annuli (5a3,5a4). An umbrella shaped disk motor rotor (12), of magnetic flux conducting material, is mounted for rotation on the disk motor spindle (5a) by an axial bearing pair (12b). The base structure (5a) has an annular recess (5a6) about the outer annulus (5a4) of the concentric annuli (5a3,5a4). The disk motor rotor (12) has a peripheral, depending annular rim (12e), projecting into the annular recess (5a6). A ring (12f) of magnetizable material is supported within the umbrella shaped disk motor rotor (12) and is radially spot magnetized in equally circumferentially spaced locations greater in number than the number of salient poles (11 b). The ring (12f) encircles the ends of the salient poles (11 b) defining radial gaps therewith. A single disk (13) is secured to an annular planar face (12c) concentrically disposed of the motor rotor (12).

    • A hard disk drive memory cassette (1), for insertion into the housing (2) of an electronic digital processor to be connected to the processing system, includes a housing (5) having therewithin at one end, a hard disk drive (6) having a single disk (13) and, at the other end a connector (1 d). A printed circuit board (7) providing control functions, including track seeking, track following and read/write signal timing, normally mounted beneath the disk drive, is now disposed between the connector (1d) and the disk drive (6) within the housing (5). The printed circuit board (7) is connected to selected terminals of the connector (1 d) to receive requests, in the form of signals, from the electronic digital signal processor and is connected to the actuator motor (9f), the disk motor (10) and the transducers (9d4) of the hard disk drive, to provide required control signals therefor. A preferred embodiment is of the PCMCIA form factor, 54 mm wide, 85.6 mm long and 5 mm thick, employing a PCMCIA connector (1d) as the electrical interface and a 1.3 form factor hard disk drive (6) as the rotating memory file. The hard disk drive memory cassette (1) is of the same size and shape as a solid state memory cassette of the same form factor and may be substituted therefor.
