    • By implementation of an optical scanner (80), the calibration of printheads (316-322) of a printing mechanism (20) may be performed in a relatively short period of time as compared to known techniques. In one respect, the time required to perform the calibration may be substantially reduced by virtue of the relatively wide field of view of the optical scanner. The relatively wide field of view generally enables for the scanning of test patterns to be performed with a relatively fewer number of scanning passes, thus reducing the time required to perform the scanning operations as well as the calibration operations. In addition, the scanning operations may yield relatively more accurate results as compared to known scanning operations. In one respect, optical scanners are capable of detecting smaller drops of ink on print media by virtue of their higher resolution capabilities. In another respect, all of the printed colors may be accurately detected through implementation of a red, green, blue (RGB) charge coupled device (CCD) contained in the optical scanners.

    • Apparatus and method find and compensate for misaimed printing elements in an array (223-226) ― or other sources of quality degradation ― using (63, 80) the elements to print a representative image (Figs. 1, 2), such as an area fill (11-14, 11'-14', 21-24, 21'-24', 31-34, 31'-34', 41-44, 41'-44'; 51-58, 51'-58'), that does not display individual mechanical properties e. g. aiming as such, but may exhibit interelement effects. Automatically, quality of that image is measured (72) and operation modified (83) for later printing based on degradation found. In one invention form, at least one quality-influencing parameter is varied (64) and measured quality (65) is then correlated (81) with the variation to guide modification. Another form quantifies (82) departure (151, 18) from image regularity (159, 19) along the array, and applies (83) the values to derive (84) reduced element-usage weights (15-17, 15'-17') for use along the array ― best by following a formula to obtain the weights from the departures. This reduces banding by taking incorrectly aimed elements wholly or partially out of service. Measurement is best done by scanning a sensor 251 along the image in an advance axis, and analyzing variations (65) in sensor signals (ideally in frequency); analysis best includes finding image nonuniformity.

    • An optical sensor (80) for detecting the position of marks on a medium (84), wherein relative motion is provided between the optical sensor and the medium during an optical sensing operation. The optical sensor produces an electrical sensor signal (86A), and has a field of view at the media in a direction of the relative movement. The marks have a nominal dimension in the direction of the relative movement, and the field of view is larger than the nominal dimension. This produces a sensor signal with a clear and relatively sharp peak in response to scanning the media mark. A method of sensing locations of marks printed by ink-jet nozzles of a plurality of printheads mounted on a scanning carriage, which includes printing an alignment pattern (150) on a print medium, the alignment pattern comprising a set of target or reference marks printed using a subset of the nozzles on each of the plurality of printheads, and a set of color marks (170) printed using a subset of the nozzles from only one of the printheads.
