A processor 106 estimates a rate of change of rotational speed of the component from the measured rotational speed and shuts down the air cycle machine when the estimated rate of change of the rotational speed of the component is greater than a selected rate threshold.

Another aspect includes determining, based on the first, second, and third temperature, a heat exchanger contamination value. Another aspect includes comparing the heat exchanger contamination value to a predetermined contamination threshold. Another aspect includes based on the heat exchanger contamination value being greater than the predetermined contamination threshold, sending a maintenance warning.

The air conditioning system operates in a first mode when the aircraft is performing high altitude operations and a second mode when the aircraft is performing low altitude operations. The second mode comprises when only the first medium (101) and the second medium (102) are mixed by the air conditioning system to produce the chamber ready medium. A treated medium is produced from the chamber medium by compressing the chamber medium via the compressor (442) and cooling the chamber medium via the heat exchanger (440). The treated medium replaces a bleed medium flowing from an environmental control system (100) to an inerting system (103).
