    • An envelope (10) to be opened and emptied has a first and a second panel (12, 13) at least partially severed along three folding edges and interconnected along a fourth folding edge (14). A portion of the first panel (12) is moved relatively to the second panel (13) in the direction of the fourth folding edge (14) and pivoted about the fourth folding edge (14). According to the invention a portion of the envelope (10) adjoining the substantially severed folding edge opposite the fourth folding edge (14) is curled and subsequently the edge of the second panel (13) opposite the fourth folding edge (14) is witheld by a retainer (20) from following the movement of said portion of said first panel (12). Envelopes of which the front and the back panel are not completely severed along three folding edges can mechanically and reliably be opened and emptied.

    • An apparatus and method for removing contents from an envelope are disclosed. In the apparatus a front envelope wall is severed from a rear envelope wall along three of the folding edges, the envelope is separated from its contents and finally the separated envelope is removed along an exit track (6). The exit track passes along the outer side of the apparatus and is at least in part externally visible. The envelope is transferred to said exit track in an unfolded condition and transported along the exit track with its former inner surfaces of the envelope walls turned away from the apparatus. The invention provides a possibility to check visually in a simple and efficient manner whether the contents of an envelope have been removed completely.

    • An envelope (23) to be opened is moved along a tangent line to a rotating, circular cutting edge (2), with the cutting edge (2) making an incision in a wall of the envelope (23). The envelope (23) is moved at a predetermined speed of transport which is different from the speed of revolution of the cutting edge (2). The cutting edge (2) moves in longitudinal direction along the material to be incised, so that a better cutting action is obtained. Each part of the material to be incised comes into contact with a large part of the cutting edge (2). As a result, the cutting action and the depth of incision are little affected by unroundness and eccentricity of the cutting edge (2). The cutting edge (2) wears uniformly because parts of the cutting edge (2) wear faster according as they project further from the axis of rotation (3). Also disclosed is an apparatus for practising this method.

    • The apparatus comprises a plurality of driven transport wheels (2) each suspended for rotation about a centerline (3) thereof and for pivotal movement about a steering axis (4) directed perpendicularly to the transport surface (1), and a string (5) passing over a driving and a driven sheave (6 and 2, 7, respectively).       Because the string passes from the driven sheave (2, 7) along positions located closely to the steering axis (4), only slight variations in the length of the string (5) occur upon pivotal motion of the transport wheel (2). The string (5) always remains in a plane transverse to the axis of the driving sheave (6), regardless of the position of the transport wheel (2).
