    • A radar apparatus installed on a vehicle includes a transmission section (10, 20, 30), a reception section (10, 40) and a processing section (50). The transmission section includes at least a transmission antenna, and emits transmission wave toward a detection area in a front of the vehicle. The transmission wave is reflected by a reflector to produce reflection wave, and the detection area includes a plurality of sub-areas. The reception section includes at least a reception antenna, and receives and detects the reflection wave. The processing unit detects a reflector indication data indicative of a reflector attribute based on the detecting result by the reception section, and then determines whether there is the reflector in the detection area, based on the reflector indication data. Also, the processing section manages the reflector indication data over a management area which is wider than the detection area.

    • An array antenna includes a plurality of patches (16) arrayed on a first surface (14a) of a base board (14) and a plurality of feeders (18) connected to the respective patches (16) so as to radiate or receive an electromagnetic wave via the patches (16). The patches (16) include a plurality of first patches (16a) and a plurality of second patches (16b). The feeders (18a) connected to the first patches (16a) are formed on the first surface (14a) of the base board (14), while the feeders (18b) connected to the second patches (16b) are formed on a second surface (14b) of the base board (14). Further, first and second transmitting and receiving circuits (28, 30) are provided on the first and second surfaces (14a, 14b), respectively, of the base board (14), so as to provide an antenna device. The first transmitting and receiving circuit (28) feeds or receives electrical signals to or from the first patches (16a), while the second transmitting and receiving circuit (30) feeds or receives electrical signals to or from the second patches (16b). The first and second transmitting and receiving circuits (28, 30) are both positioned on the same side of the arrayed patches (16). With such arrangements, the directivities of a first antenna unit with the first patches (16a) and of a second antenna unit with the second patches (16b) can be made different from each other, and the overall size of the antenna device can be reduced to a considerable degree.

    • An antenna device comprises an array antenna (16) having a plurality of transmitting planar antenna elements (12) and a plurality of receiving planar antenna elements (14), a transmission selecting circuit (18) for selecting at least one of the transmitting planar antenna elements, a transmitting circuit (20) for transmitting a signal to the selected at least one transmitting planar antenna element, a reception selecting circuit (22) for selecting at least one of the receiving antenna elements, and a receiving circuit (24) for receiving a signal from the selected at least one receiving planar antenna element. By selecting the planar antenna elements exclusively for transmission or reception, it becomes possible to radiate or absorb (receive) a main beam in or from a direction corres-ponding to the respective planar antenna element, thereby enabling more minute switching of the main beam directions and improving the directional resolution of the antenna device. Further, by providing the transmitting and receiving planar antenna elements separately, it becomes possible to prevent the deterioration of the reception sensitivity due to the leakage of part of a received signal into a transmission system of the antenna device. An antenna system employing the antenna device is also disclosed.
