    • The present invention relates to an apparatus for checking the authenticity of banknotes in unprotected areas. In this context, the invention is based on an apparatus for checking the authenticity of banknotes in unprotected areas, having a sensor arrangement which contains a light source which produces light at a first wavelength which is used to illuminate the banknotes to be checked, whereupon one or more feature substances which are present in and/or on the banknotes produce light at a second wavelength which is detected by the sensor arrangement, and having a control device which evaluates data from the sensor arrangement using the light at the second wavelength and compares them with reference data in order to determine the authenticity of the banknotes, the design and the operation of the sensor arrangement and/or the control device allowing conclusions to be drawn about the feature substance(s) contained in the banknotes only with difficulty.

    • The invention relates to a method and a device for verifying valuable documents provided with an authenticity mark in the form of at least one luminescent substance. The aim of the invention is to achieve a simple and reliable differentiation between authenticity marks, even if the latter exhibit extremely similar spectral behaviour. To achieve this, a measurement vector is formed from the measured values that correspond to different frequencies and/or frequency ranges of the luminescent radiation and the measurement vector is assigned to one of several predefined reference vectors, which correspond to different authenticity marks, whereby at least one classification area is assigned to the reference vectors and verification takes place to establish the classification area in which the measurement vector lies.
