    • A phosphor particle having a continuous aluminum oxide coating surrounding its outer surface is provided. The phosphor substrate of the coated particle of the present invention is a manganese-activated zinc orthosilicate phosophor having the empirical formula:
          Zn (2.00-x-y) Mn x SiO (4.00-y) (WO₃) z
      wherein:
      0.04 ≦ x ≦ 0.15;
      0 ≦ y ≦ 0.05; and
      0 ≦ z ≦ 0.002.
      Also provided is a fluorescent lamp including a glass envelope wherein the inner wall of the glass envelope is coated with a coating comprising one or more layers of phosphor, at least one of the phosphor layers including a phosphor component comprising particles of manganese-activated zinc orthosilicate phosphor having the empirical formula:
          Zn (2.00-x-y) Mn x SiO (4.00-y) (WO₃) z
      wherein:
      0.04 ≦ x ≦ 0.15;
      0 ≦ y ≦ 0.05; and
      0 ≦ z ≦ 0.002, the particles of the manganese-activated zinc orthosilicate phosphor being individually coated with a continuous coating of aluminum oxide. A white-emitting phosphor blend is further provided. The white-emitting phosphor blend comprises a green-emitting phosphor component. The green-emitting phosphor component comprising particles of manganese-activated zinc orthosilicate phosphor having the empirical formula:
          Zn (2.00-x-y) Mn x SiO (4.00-y) (WO₃) z
      wherein:
      0.04 ≦ x ≦ 0.15;
      0 ≦ y ≦ 0.05; and
      0 ≦ z ≦ 0.002,
      the particles of the manganese-activated zinc orthosilicate phosphor being individually coated with a continuous coating of aluminum oxide.
