    • An article is described, including an inner surface (24) which can be exposed to a first fluid; an inlet (30); and an outer surface (26) spaced from the inner surface, which can be exposed to a hotter second fluid. The article further includes at least one row or other pattern of passage holes (28). Each passage hole includes an inlet bore (34) extending through the substrate (20) from the inlet at the inner surface to a passage hole-exit proximate to the outer surface (26), with the inlet bore terminating in a chevron outlet (32) adjacent the hole-exit. The chevron outlet includes a pair of wing troughs (42,44) having a common surface region (46) between them. The common surface region includes a valley (48) which is adjacent the hole-exit; and a plateau (50) adjacent the valley. The article can be an airfoil. Related methods for preparing the passage holes are also described.

    • A method of manufacturing a component (100) is provided. The method includes forming one or more grooves (132) in an outer surface (112) of a substrate (110). Each groove (132) extends at least partially along the surface (112) of the substrate (110) and has a base (134), a top (136) and at least one discharge point (170). The method further includes forming a run-out region (172) adjacent to the discharge point (170) for each groove (132) and disposing a coating (150) over at least a portion of the surface (112) of the substrate (110). The groove(s) (132) and the coating (150) define one or more channels (130) for cooling the component (100). Components (100) with cooling channels (130) are also provided.

The component layer (120) may further define a plurality of passages (140) extending generally between the first inner surface (122) and the second outer surface (124). Each of the plurality of channels (130) may be fluidly connected to at least one of the plurality of passages (140). The cover layer (125) may be situated adjacent the second outer surface (124) of the component layer (120). The plurality of passages (140) may be configured to flow a cooling medium (90) to the plurality of channels (130) and provide impingement cooling to the cover layer (125). The plurality of channels (130) may be configured to flow cooling medium (90) therethrough, cooling the cover layer (125).

The inspection method includes disposing a component in a wind tunnel configured to create a predetermined Mach number distribution for an external surface of the component.
