    • An AC-type gas discharge display includes a base (1), discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B) which are arranged on the base (1) in parallel to each other and which contain fluorescent phosphors, data electrodes (13) formed on the external surfaces of the discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B) such that the data electrodes (13) extend in the longitu dinal direction of the discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B), and display electrodes (11) formed in pairs on the external surfaces of the discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B) at the opposite side of the data electrodes (13) such that the display electrodes (11) intersect the discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B). Each of the discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B) has a flattened elliptical shape in cross-section thereof and includes a pair of flat portions. The data electrodes (13) are formed on one of the flat portions and scanning electrodes (11) and common electrodes (11) are alternately arranged on the other one of the flat portions, and the discharge tubes (2R;2G;2B) are supported by the base (1) at one or the other one of the flat portions.

    • In order to prevent abnormal wall charge accumulation, and thereby to prevent accidental erroneous discharges resulting from such abnormal accumulation, paths for leakage of wall charges accumulated on dielectric layers 3 are provided in dielectric layers 3 corresponding to a write electrode W1 at one end of a shift channel and a final shift electrode y2n at the other end of the shift channel.
A path for leakage of wall charges may be provided by a crevice 11 in the dielectric layer 3 which extends from the surface of the dielectric layer 3 to the surface of the write electrode W1 or the surface of the final shift electrode y2n.
Other means of providing such a leakage path are also disclosed.

    • A method of displaying a dynamic halftone image on a display panel comprising pixels by dividing each frame of the image into subframes and by turning on and off the subframes, comprises the steps of: finding a line of n pixels that simultaneously display a specific intensity level in a frame and another specific intensity level in the next frame; calculating the sum ΔS of stimulus on a retina to be produced with a weighted corrective pulse, which will be applied to one of the n pixels, as follows: B 1 T ≦ B 2 T + ΔS ≦ B 3 T, or B 1 T ≧ B 2 T + ΔS ≧ B 3 T where T is a period in which the intensity level of the n pixels changes from one to another, B 1 is an average of stimulus on a retina due to one of the n pixels before the change, B 2 is an average of stimulus on the retina due to the same during the change, and B 3 is an average of stimulus on the retina due to the same after the change; comparing the intensity levels with each other; selecting the weighted corrective pulses, which turn on/off corresponding subframes thereby to enable/disable corresponding intensity levels, respectively, according to the n pixels and a change in the intensity levels between the frames, so that the total sum of stimulus on the retina to be produced with the corrective pulses is substantially equal to nΔS; and adjusting original display signals for the n pixels according to the weighted corrective pulses, respectively.
