    • The present invention is directed to an apparatus and a process which is low-cost, simple to use, reliable and long-lived and will effectively monitor the moisture condition of a volume of soil. In accordance with the invention, a light transmitting rod is placed into the soil so that its lower end is within the soil and its upper end is visible from outside the soil volume. The lower end of the rod is beveled to reflect light entering the rod from its upper end back toward the upper end.
      In accordance with the method of the present invention, observance of the presence or absence of light at the upper end of the rod determines the moisture content of the soil. That is, the presence of light confirms that the soil is dry, whereas the absence of light (a dark end) confirms that the soil is moist. In accordance with the apparatus of the present invention, the rod is placed into the soil and a light sensor is placed adjacent to or on the upper end of the rod to control a pump or valve for providing water to the soil.

    • The valve assembly (10) of the present invention includes a body portion (12) having one or more inlets (18) and two aligned outlets (20,21). The outlets are located on opposing faces of the body portion, one having a generally rigid valve seat defining a first valve outlet port (20) and the other having a generally flexible valve seat defining a second valve outlet port (22). The valve assembly also employs a valve support assembly (26) configured to move relative to the body portion generally along the axis of the aligned outlets. The support assembly has a flexible valve member (30) at one end positioned inside the body portion and configured to engage the rigid valve seat to block flow through the first valve outlet port. The support assembly also has a generally rigid valve member (44) positioned outside the body portion and configured to engage the flexible valve seat to block flow through the second valve outlet port. With this construction, when the valve support member is in an open position, both the flexible and rigid valve members are spaced from the rigid valve seat and flexible valve seat, respectively, allowing flow of fluid through the valve. However, when the valve support assembly is moved to the closed position, both the valve members are in contact with their respective valve seats and fluid flow is blocked.

    • An apparatus is provided for controlling the flow of fluid through a flexible wall tube. The apparatus in the form of a valve includes a slotted saddle with female threading to receive a male threaded stem which is actuated within the saddle by a knob integrally connected to the stem. The slotted saddle may be installed onto an existing tube run without requiring disconnection. The stem has a spherical tip which contacts the tube to collapse to decrease the area flow therethrough. The knob and saddle are closely fitted to prevent spreading of the saddle during high thread loads. Calibration is also provided so that a desired flow control can be repeated with accuracy.

    • An apparatus having a variety of applications is provided for indexing a rotary component. The apparatus of the present invention includes a housing, a resilient electrically conductive band contained within the housing and connected to the rotary component, at least two indexing electrical contacts located on the housing internal periphery and in slidable contact with the band, and a bridging electrical contact electrically connected to the band while the band rotates.     • A plastic spring loaded shut-off valve for drains in live wells of boats seals without the presence of fluid pressure.
