    • An improved apparatus for generating a high-pressure fluid jet includes an orifice mount (11) having a frusto-conical surface (12) that engages a frusto-conical wall in a cutting head (22), the geometry of the orifice mount (11) and cutting head (22) being selected to increase the stability of the mount and reduce deflection of the mount adjacent a jewel orifice (20), when subjected to pressure. Alignment of a nozzle body (37) and the cutting head (22) is improved by providing pilot diameters both upstream and downstream of threads on the nozzle body (37) and bore (23) of the cutting head, respectively. Accurate placement of a mixing tube(49) in a cutting head is achieved by rigidly fixing a collar (52) to an outer surface of the mixing tube (49), the collar engaging a shoulder (34) and bore of the cutting head downstream of a mixing chamber (33), to precisely locate the mixing chamber (33) axially and radially.

    • A self-venting seal assembly (10) for use in an ultrahigh-pressure pump is shown and described. In a preferred embodiment, a low-pressure seal (26) is used to energize a high-pressure seal (34), the low-pressure seal (26) having a "u" shaped cross-section, thereby creating a groove (32) in a first end of the low-pressure seal (26). When the first end (28) of the seal (26) is exposed to pressurized fluid, it expands outwardly thereby substantially preventing the leakage of fluid past it. To the extent that any pressurized fluid does leak past the seal (26), which would act against a second end (30) of the seal (26) when the pressure on the opposite side (28) of the seal (26) drops, the seal (26) compresses inwardly, thereby allowing the pressurized fluid to flow back past the seal (26). In a preferred embodiment, the high-pressure seal comprises a sleeve seal (34) having an annular opening (36) through which the plunger (14) reciprocates, the sleeve seal (34) being supported by a backup ring, the backup ring (38) also having an annular opening (40) through which the plunger (14) passes. The sleeve seal (34) and backup ring (38) are configured such that they may be placed in an annular bore (17) of a seal carrier (11) and an annular end surface (44) of the sleeve seal (34) and an annular surface (42) of the backup ring (38) abut each other and are substantially flush, thereby simplifying manufacturing and installation of the seal assembly (10).

    • A fitting (120) for collecting or distributing high-pressure fluid via fluid transmission lines is provided. The fitting (120) includes a body (122), and a plurality of apertures (124) formed in the body (122) in a common plane, intersecting inside the body (122) such that all of the apertures (124) are in mutual fluid communication. Each of the apertures (124) is configured to receive a threaded coupling member of a respective high-pressure transmission line. The fitting (120) also includes first and second compression members (132) positioned on opposing sides of the body (122) and coupled thereto so as to exert a compressing bias to the body (122) in an axis perpendicular to the common plane. The compression members (132) each comprise a raised contact surface (135) corresponding to the region of the body (122) where the plurality of apertures (124) meet, and through which the compressing bias is exerted. The fitting (120) may be an elbow-fitting, a tee fitting, a cross-fitting, or some other configuration.
