摘要： An apparatus detects arcing faults at a first wavelength. A light source provides modulated light at a second different wavelength and a first frequency. An optical fiber receives the modulated light and gathers ambient light at both wavelengths. A splitter receives and splits the received light into first and second beams. A first filter extracts from the first beam a first filtered beam including the first wavelength. A first photodetector generates a first electrical signal from the first filtered beam. A second filter extracts from the second beam a second filtered beam excluding the first wavelength. A second photodetector generates a second electrical signal from the second filtered beam. A low pass filter extracts from the second electrical signal a third electrical signal representative of light at the second wavelength excluding the modulated light. A comparator generates an arcing signal when the first electrical signal exceeds the third electrical signal.

摘要： Arcing faults in an electric power system are detected by sensors (1, 1') powered by the light generated by the arcing even in the presence of background light. The sensors (1, 1') have one or more first photovoltaic cells (5) energized by light passed through a first filter (7) having a passband which includes a characteristic wavelength of the arcing material to generate a sensed light electrical signal. One or more second photovoltaic cells (11) are energized by light filtered by a second filter (13) having a passband not including the characteristic wavelength to generate a background light electrical signal. These two electrical signals are applied in opposition to an LED (17) which is turned on when arcing is present. The light signal from the LED (17) is transmitted through an optic fiber (29) to a photoelectric circuit (25), which generates an arcing signal when energized. The LED (17) may be biased toward the on condition by unfiltered additional photovoltaic cells (21).

The invention provides for the selective treatment of portions of the surface of the conductive polymer composition by at least one of plasma/corona etching and plasma sputtering/plasma spray to create a site for attachment of the electrodes resulting in a low contact resistance. The electrical devices of the invention are particularly useful in circuit protection applications.

摘要： Effective arc-quenching is desired for current interrupters as defined to include circuit breakers, contactors, fuses and the like under conditions of operation where an electrical arc is produced that must be quenched to eliminate an undesirable current flow. An improved mode of arc-quenching coatings comprising urethane, melamine and acrylic based resin compositions containing inorganic nitrides such as boron nitride, aluminum nitride and silicon nitride are found to be effective as arc-quenching materials for current interrupters. Other coating compositions comprising urethane, melamine and inorganic nitrides mentioned above and high nitrogen organic compounds such as urea, hydantoin, allantoin, guanidine carbonate, guanine, melamine cyanurate and 1,3-diphenyl guanidine are also found to be effective as arc-quenching materials for current interrupters.

摘要： Arcing faults in electric power systems, such as switchgear (73), are detected by gathering light from components (87-97) in the system and splitting the gathered light into two beams (17 1 , 17 2 ). The first beam (17 1 ) is passed through a first narrow band filter (19) to extract a wavelength characteristic of arcing in the material of the selected component, such as the copper in the switchgear conductors. The second beam (17 2 ) is passed through a second filter (21) having a narrow bandwidth, not including the characteristic wavelength. The extracted light signals are converted to a sensed light electrical signal and a background light electrical signal, respectively, by photodiodes (27 1 , 27 2 ) and compared. If the sensed light electrical signal exceeds the background light electrical signal by a selected threshold, an output device such as a trip solenoid (31) is actuated.
