摘要： There is disclosed a thermal cycling cuvette (30, 30a, 30b, 30e, 30f, 30g) constructed with a chamber (32, 32a, 32b, 32c, 32d, 32e, 32f, 32g) having an improved sample fluid thermal time constant. The fluid surface-to-volume ratio, and the cuvette thermal path length and thermal resistance of at least one of the walls that provides a major surface of contact (34, 34a, 34b, 34e, or 164, 34f, or 164f, 34g), are selected to provide such a thermal time constant that is no greater than about 10 seconds for a cuvette volume no greater than about 200 µl. Also included in the cuvette are means (60, 60a, 60b, 60c, 60d, 60e, 60f, 60g) permitting the introduction and removal of liquid into and from the cuvette. A preferred construction permits ready and substantially complete removal of the liquid.
In addition, a method for the amplification of nucleic acid sequences is described.

摘要： Blood collecting devices, known as phlebotomy tubes, comprise evacuated tubes which are inserted into a syringe to collect a blood sample. Known tubes have gripping means, for example a gripping outer surface, built into the tube to allow the desired manipulation of the tube to be carried out. However, the presence of any extensive gripping surface may get in the way of any subsequent processing of the sample whilst still in the tube. The problem is particularly acute when when the tube needs to be reduced in size. Described herein is an arrangement in which a removable handle (40) can be connected to a phlebotomy tube (39) for insertion into a patient and its subsequent removal. The handle (40) and the tube (39) are connected to one another by means of a pivot pin (52) formed in the handle (40) which engages with an aperture (50) formed in the tube (39). A hook end (62) is formed on a bayonet member (60) carried by the handle (40), which when the handle (40) is rotated relative to the tube (39) about the pivot pin (52), latches into a recess (72) formed in a latch groove (70) on the tube (39) to prevent separation of the handle (40) and tube (39) when axial force is applied to the combined device. The off-axis joining of the handle (40) to the tube (39) renders visually apparent when sufficient unlocking by rotation of the handle (40) has occurred.

However, the wash head (202) tends to crust over unless left in a soak reservoir (220). Described herein is a mechanism which provides for mounting of the soak reservoir (220) and for aligning it concentric with the vertical movement of the wash head (202) without the need for rotary movement of the wash head (202). The mechanism also moves the soak reservoir (220) out of alignment when the wash head (202) needs to enter and wash a container (C).
