    • A controller (1) for a smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarm system automatically assigns one of a plurality of commands to a common user action button (10) press, according to circumstances. It assigns a test command if all of the alarm devices are in standby, a locate command if any of the alarm devices are alarming, and a hush command if its last command was a locate command. The processor activates output indicators to provide alarm condition information to a user, and there is a dedicated indicator (21-23) for each sensed condition. The processor controls the indicators (24-27) to inform the user of the command which would be assigned to a next button (10) press.

    • A smoke alarm device comprises an optical smoke sensor including a light emitting diode (IRED) and a photo-detector (PD) mounted in a chamber, and a circuit with a processor (U1), a user interface, and a sound emitter (HORN). The processor is adapted to cause the light emitter (IRED) to be pulsed by a drive circuit. The processor (U1) enters a de-sensitized mode for at least a first and a second period upon receipt of user commands. It automatically performs dust compensation re-calibration in the second or a subsequent de-sensitized period. The re-calibration is implemented in a duration of less than twenty minutes. Also, the processor directs emission of an indicator that the device is de-sensitized while it is in the de-sensitized mode. The processor ceases alarming for a period in excess of 4 hours if it performs dust compensation and also receives a hush instruction from a user. The circuit includes a current source for the light emitter to maintain a uniform current through said emitter. The current source comprises a light emitter control switch transistor (Q3) in series with the light emitter, a resistor (R25) connected between the light emitter switch (Q3) and ground, a diode (U3) providing a voltage reference for a base of a light emitter switch (Q3), and a control switch (QP2) linked with the base of the light emitter switch (Q3), and means in the processor (U1) for activating the control switch (QP2).

    • An alarm system comprises a plurality of alarm devices (10) interconnected by an interconnect wire (IC), and a remote control unit (1). The remote control unit (1) modulating remote control signals on an interconnect wire (IC) linking the alarm devices (10), and the alarm device control circuits (50) perform operations in response to said signals. The remote control unit (1) applies to the interconnect wire (IC) a higher voltage level than that of alarm device interconnect signals. A switch (3) causes the high-Voltage signal to be delivered on the interconnect wire (IC) by connecting the mains supply to the interconnect wire (IC) via a capacitor (C1, C2) and a diode (CR2). The alarm device control circuits (50) operate in response to a remote control signal to test or hush, the associated devices or to suppress low-battery beeps. Also, a remote control unit (1) switch (2) and a circuit (4) operate in response to a user input to short the interconnect wire (IC) to a low voltage, so that interconnect signalling of the alarm devices (10) is prevented and only a device sensing on alarm condition sounds.
