摘要： An ignition apparatus (10) includes an oil seal (43) integrated with a spark plug boot (54) and configured to mate with a cylinder head (14) so as to seal the oil that is found under the cam cover (13) from the spark plug (15) and high voltage terminal of the plug. The cylinder head (14) includes a ring-cavity (45) recessed in the head surrounding the spark plug (15). The spark plug boot (54) includes an annular sealing rib (47) on a lowermost axial end. The sealing rib (47) is configured in size and shape to effect an interference fit in the ring cavity (45). The ignition apparatus (10) includes another seal (41)integrated at the top to seal to the cam cover (13). The two integrated seals (41, 43) eliminate the need for a spark plug tube.

Each coil assembly is progressively wound. The coil case includes a coil cavity (32) for each coil assembly, a primary connector, and two secondary connectors for each coil cavity. Each primary coil is connected to the primary connector (34) and an end of each secondary coil is connected to a single secondary connector (36). A quantity of potting material (16) is poured over the open end (32a) of each coil cavity (32). A second embodiment of the axial potted ignition coil (10') includes a modular coil case (42), at least one coil assembly (14), and a quantity of potting material (16). The modular coil case includes at least one coil tube (44), a rear end cap (46) and a forward end cap (48). Each coil assembly is inserted into a respective coil tube.
