摘要： When hot rolling metal strip (11), it is usual to apply tension to the strip (11) and then a contact-type strip tension detector (9) is employed to detect variations in tension across the width of the strip. The signals are used to adjust the rolling mill (1) in the sense to reduce shape variations across the width substantially to zero. Until tension has been applied to the leading end of the strip (11), the contact-type detector (9) cannot be used. Consequently, the strip (11) may be of bad shape. The invention resides in employing a non-contact type strip shape detector (7) to detect variation in shape and adjust the rolling mill (1) until tension has been applied to the strip (11).

摘要： To determine the shape of metal strip moving in the direction of its length, a roller is urged against the underside of the strip and the tension across the width of the strip is a measure of the shape of the strip. To measure the tension, the roll consists of an annular ring (3) fitted around a rotatable arbor (1) but separated therefrom by an elastic body (5) which permits displacement of the ring in the direction towards and away from the arbor. The displacement of the ring relative to the arbor is detected (7) and employed to indicate the tension in the strip.
