    • A combined vehicle frame assembly and battery for a vehicle includes a plurality of structural members that are joined together to form a vehicle frame assembly, such as a ladder frame or space frame assembly. One of the plurality of structural members is formed as a closed channel structural member defining a hollow interior. A battery is disposed within the interior of the hollow structural member. Preferably, the structural member is formed in such a manner as to support and retain the battery therein to prevent relative movement during operation of the vehicle. The battery can be composed of either a single battery or a plurality of separate battery cells that are electrically connected together to provide electrical energy to the electrical system of the vehicle.

    • A vehicular body and frame assembly (10) includes a plurality of individual frame modules (12,14,16) that can be selectively connected together to form customized assemblies. Each of the individual modules can be constructed in any desired manner. To connect the modules together, each module has cooperating first and second connecting structures provided thereon. The first connecting structures are designed to connect to the second connecting structures. For example, the first connecting structures may be formed as hooks (24) provided on the lower portions of the frame modules, and the second connecting structures may be formed as pins (26) provided on the lower portions of the frame modules upon which the hooks can be engaged. The frame modules can be connected together in this manner and pivoted to a mating position, wherein they can be positively retained together by bolts (28) or other fasteners that extend between the mating frame modules.

    • A method for manufacturing an assembly of first and second components, such as an end fitting (20) and a driveshaft tube (16) for use in a vehicular drive train system (10). Initially, a yoke is provided including a body (21) having a recess (21a) provided therein and a pair of yoke arms (22,23). The recess defines an inner body portion (21b) and an outer body portion (21c) in the yoke. A portion of a driveshaft tube inserted within the recess between the inner body portion and the outer body portion. If desired, one or more retaining structures or an adhesive material may be provided on either or both of the driveshaft tube or the yoke. Then, a magnetic pulse forming process is performed to deform the outer body portion of the body of the yoke into engagement with the portion of the driveshaft tube to provide a combined driveshaft tube and yoke assembly.

    • A method of joining two vehicle axle housing components (20,32) made from the same or dissimilar materials includes providing a first axle housing component (20,32), and providing a second axle housing component (20,32) made from a material which is same/dissimilar to the material used to make the first axle housing component (20,32), where one of the first and second axle housing components is a metallic component made of a metallic material. A portion of one of the first and second axle housing components is positioned within a portion of the other of the axle housing components in an overlapping manner, thereby forming an overlapping portion. A metallic band (36) may be disposed around the overlapping portion. An inductor (62,64) is positioned around the overlapping portion. The inductor is energized to generate a magnetic field for collapsing at least one of the overlapping portion and the metallic band (36) at a velocity sufficient to magnetic pulse weld the metallic component to each other, thereby securing the first and second axle housing components (20,32) together.

    • A separate type of body and frame assembly includes a frame portion (20) and a body portion (21). The frame portion (20) includes a pair of side rails (22,23), each of which has a plurality of openings (22a,23a) formed therethrough. A plurality of cross members (24,25,26,27) extend between side rails and are secured thereto. Each of the cross members has first and second ends (25a,26a) that extend through the openings formed through the side rails. Each of the first and second ends of the cross members is formed integrally and unitarily with the cross member and has a body mount structure (25b,26b), such as an aperture, formed therein or otherwise provided thereon. The ends of the cross members are initially inserted through the openings formed through the side rails. Then, such ends of the cross members are secured to the side rails, such as by electromagnetic pulse welding, to form the frame portion. The body mount apertures cooperate with respective body mounts provided on the body portion to connect the body portion to the frame portion to form the vehicle body and frame assembly.

    • A vehicular space frame assembly includes a plurality of structural components that are secured together to define an enclosed three-dimensional space. A plurality of body closure panels, such as a pair of door closure panels, a front windshield closure panel, a rear windshield closure panel, and a floor pan closure panel, are mounted on the structural components. Each of the body closure panels is a generally flat panel having one or more open spaces provided therein to support other components of the vehicular body on the space frame assembly. The body closure panels may have respective recesses formed therein that receive portions of the associated structural components therein. The recesses may be sized and shaped to receive the receive these portions in a snap fit relationship. One or more gaskets or other conventional sealing devices may be disposed between each of the body closure panels and the associated structural components of the vehicular space frame assembly. Additionally, other gaskets may be provided on the body closure panels to provide a sealed engagement with the other components of the vehicular body and frame assembly.
