The recess (30-5) serve to reduce the area available for adhesion and the trapped fluid pressure provides an opening bias to the suction valve (20). If necessary, or desired, restricted communication between the compression chamber and the shallow recess (30-5) can take place to provide a higher pressure in the recess at the time of transition from discharge to suction.

The preferred radial extent of the seating surface is 0.014 to 0.018 inches (0,356 to 0,457mm) and the preferred ratio of the area of the suction valve seat (30-1) to the passage (30-2) therethrough is in the range of 13% to 25%.
