    • A method for manufacturing and refining crude lead from arsenic-containing lead raw-materials of a metallic, oxidic, sulphatic or sulphidic nature. In the manufacture of said crude lead, the lead raw-material is melted in a furnace in which strong turbulence can be created in the contents thereof, in the presence of a slag former, whereafter the slag is tapped-off. The furnace used is preferably a top blown rotary converter or a furnace of the Kaldo-type. The invention is characterized in that iron in metallic finely-divided form, such as iron filings, iron powder or finely-divided pieces of iron, is charged to the crude-lead melt whilst creating strong turbulence therein, or said iron is caused to be formed in situ, preferably by adding silicon, silicides, carbon, carbides or ferro-alloys containing carbon and silicon, wherewith arsenic and any antimony present form an iron speiss which is separated from the crude-lead melt in liquid form in direct conjunction with a gravitational separation of speiss and crude lead. Any copper present in the melt can be segregated therefrom as metallic copper or a copper speiss, by cooling the crude-lead melt.

    • A method of refining crude lead from copper-containing lead raw-materials which possibly also contain arsenic and which are of a metallic, oxidic, sulphatic or sulphidic type, in a furnace in which the contents thereof can be subjected to turbulence, preferably in a top blown rotary converter, for example, of the Kaldotype. According to the invention, subsequent to chemical reduction and tapping-off of the slag, the crudelead melt is cooled to a temperature beneath about 700°C whilst strongly agitating said melt, in order to separate out a copper phase or a copper speiss. The coolant used may be an oxidic or sulphatic lead raw-material, a crushed iron-silicate slag, a slag former, and, preferably, water in liquid finely-divided form. Large quantities of arsenic can be removed prior to said cooling, by forming an iron speiss, by adding iron to the crude-lead melt or forming iron in situ therewith.
