    • Embodiments provide an apparatus, a method and a computer program. The apparatus 10 is operable to determine estimates for transmitted symbols from received symbols of an optical signal affected by XpolM. The apparatus 10 is operable to group two or more subsequent received symbols from the optical signal into a group of received symbols and to estimate an optical channel based on the group of received symbols and a hypothesis on the transmitted symbols. The apparatus 10 is further operable to determine a reliability measure for a combination of the group of received symbols, the channel estimate, and the hypothesis, and the apparatus 10 is further operable to determine the estimates for the transmitted symbols based on reliability measures for multiple hypotheses on the transmitted symbols.

    • The present document relates to optical transmission systems. In particular, the present document relates to methods and systems for the mitigation of Cross-Polarization Modulation (XPOLM) in optical transmission systems. A coherent optical receiver (200) adapted to receive an optical signal transmitted over an optical transmission channel exhibiting XPOLM is described. The received optical signal comprises a first polarization component and a second polarization component. The first and second polarization components comprise sequences of M ary phase shift keying, referred to as MPSK, symbols, respectively, M being an integer, with M > 2. The coherent optical receiver (200) comprises a conversion and processing unit (201, 202) adapted to generate a set of digital signals based on the received optical signal; a polarization de-multiplexing unit (203) adapted to de-multiplex the set of digital signals into a first two dimensional, referred to as complex, component in a first polarization axis and a second complex component in a second polarization axis; and an XPOLM compensation unit (204) adapted to transform the first and second complex components into the Stokes space, thereby yielding a set of Stokes parameters; determine a rotation of the first and second polarization axes based on the set of Stokes parameters; and determine XPOLM compensated first and second complex components by transforming the first and second complex components in accordance to the determined rotation of the first and second polarization axes.

    • Proposed is a method of equalizing an optical signal that has an overall bandwidth formed on a number of adjacent spectral slots, wherein the signal comprises a set of non-overlapping subcarrier signals. A distribution of the subcarrier signals onto the slots is such, that at least one slot is occupied by more than one subcarrier signal. The signal is received and amplified. Respective power levels are measured for the subcarrier signals. Distribution data is provided, which indicates the distribution of the subcarrier signals onto the spectral slots. Power level data is provided, which indicates for the spectral slots respective desired power levels. For the spectral slots respective attenuation values are derived, using the measured power levels, the distribution data and the power level data. Finally, the optical transmission signal is attenuated within the spectral slots individually, using the derived attenuation values.

    • Proposed is a method of receiving a phase-modulated polarization division multiplexed (PDM) optical signal. A first digital signal and a second digital signal are derived from the optical signal, representing respective complex values of respective, orthogonal polarization states.
      Polarization division demultiplexing is performed, using a set of FIR filters of K filter coefficients. Within a first time interval, the sets of filter coefficients are updated for different discrete time instances, using a first algorithm to achieve PDM demultiplexing with regard to a first phase-modulation method. Within a second time interval, the sets of filter coefficients are kept fixed. Within a third time interval, the sets of filter coefficients are updated for different discrete time instances, using a second algorithm which achieves PDM demultiplexing with regard to a second phase-modulation method different from the first phase-modulation method.
