    • An exciter (10) includes a concentrically laminated rotary disk (25) with an alternative current (AC) windings (30), and a stationary disk (35) with direct current (DC) excitation windings (40) and a plurality of DC excitation poles (45). The stationary disk (35) is spaced from the rotary laminated disk (25) to form a gap therebetween. Upon rotation of the laminated disk (25), a DC current applied to the DC excitation poles (45) produces an AC current in the AC windings (30). The AC current passes through a rotating rectifier (20) to produce DC current, which supplies the generator or motor field. The stationary disk (25) also includes pilot AC windings (50). The DC excitation poles are on a first face of the stationary disk and the AC windings are on the second face of the stationary disk. A rectifier (305) is coupled between the pilot AC windings and the DC excitation windings of the stationary disk. A pilot disk (60) with permanent magnets (65) is spaced from the stationary disk to form a gap therebetween. Upon rotation of the pilot disk (60), an AC current is created in the pilot AC windings (50) of the stationary disk (35).
