摘要： A method and apparatus for reducing power consumption of an auto-negotiating ethernet transceiver by enabling a driver for the transceiver to alternate between a typical higher-power energy consumption mode to a lower-power energy consumption mode when a network link is no longer detected by the transceiver. A new algorithm is included within the driver which is activated by the driver detecting the absence of the network link. The driver causes the portable computer to send instructions to the ethernet transceiver so that the transceiver continues to check for the network link. If the network link is not detected, the driver causes the ethernet transceiver to power down into a lower power consumption mode for a specific period of time. After the period of time has elapsed, the driver causes the ethernet transceiver to enter a normal higher power consumption mode during which the ethernet transceiver again checks for the network link. This process repeats itself until the portable computer is shut down or the network link is reestablished.

摘要： A PCMCIA card (10) comprises a connector (18), a frame (40), a substrate (42), and a metal cover having a top cover pane (44). A ground plate (20) having rearwardly extending ground contacts (90) is carried on the upper surface of the connector (18). The frame (40) includes an insulative cross beam (104) adjacent to the rear of the connector (18). The cross beam (104) supports the top cover panel (44) of the card to prevent the top cover panel (44) from contacting the connector ground plate or the contacts extending from the ground plate (20). Along with portions of the ground plate (20), the cross beam flange (124) closes off the space between the connector (18) and the front edge (144) of the top cover panel. The top cover panel (44) includes a pair of laterally spaced, forwardly extending tabs (150, 152), each tab overlaying an end shoulder surface on the connector (18).

In one form (Figs. 1,2), structures are provided for receiving one or more RJ series plugs and for making electrical connection with at the contacts on the plug and conveying any signals on the contacts to a communications device such as a telephone, facsimile machine, modem, or a local area network adapter. A body (102) includes one or more recesses (106) which receive the plug. An expandable and stretchable membrane (114) isolates the contacts in the plug from electrical contact with an object in a surrounding environment such that passage of current from one or more of the electrical contacts to an object present in the surrounding environment is prevented. Also provided (Figs. 7, 14) is a replaceable direct access arrangement (151, 258) which is replaceably held within the communications device (150, 250). Both the structures providing the receptacles and the direct access arrangement are easily removable in case of damage or if other functions are desired. The replaceable direct access arrangement allows operation in countries having different telecommunications standards and allows operation with many different communications devices. Alternative structures for allowing connection to RJ series plugs are described. Wireless communication structures are also described.

摘要： A Type III PCMCIA communications card (10) for insertion in a slot in a host computer comprises a housing (50) including a top wall (56) and longitudinal, parallel side walls (52, 54) depending from the top wall (56) the longitudinal side walls and top wall defining an internal cavity enclosed by a bottom cover panel (60). The housing (50) further has a forward end, a rear margin (62) and a rear end surface, the rear margin of the housing defining at least one substantially longitudinally oriented receptacle (82, 84, 86) extending forwardly from the rear end surface and sized and configured to receive a standard RJ-type modular plug. A substrate (160) mounted within the cavity of the housing, supports electronic components for carrying out the communications function. The substrate (160) has a rear margin (174) carrying a contact block (180) including a plurality of contact wires (230), each contact wire having a first portion (132, 134, 136) connected to components on the substrate (160) and a second portion (238) extending into the at least one receptacle (82, 84, 86), the second portion of the contact wire being shaped and positioned for engagement with a corresponding contact on the connector plug. A connector (34) provided at the forward end of the housing is adapted to be received by a corresponding connector within the slot of the host computer. The card has an overall height not exceeding approximately 10.5 mm, the communications card being directly connectable to a digital information system such as a LAN or a telephone line system utilizing standard RJ-type connectors.
