    • A self-propelled concrete finishing trowel (20) has an improved power steering control system that steers the machine (20) by tilting the driven shaft(s) of the rotor assembly or assemblies (28,30) of the machine (20) without requiring the imposition of fatiguing actuating forces by the machine's operator. The steering control system includes at least one electric actuator, such as a ball screw actuator, coupled to each rotor assembly (28,30) of the machine (20) and controlled by an operator-manipulated controller (85). The controller (85) preferably includes at least one, and possibly two, joysticks that can be manipulated by the operator to steer the machine in the direction of joystick motion and preferably at a speed that is proportional to the magnitude of joystick movement. In the typical case in which the machine (20) is steered by pivoting a gearbox of at least one rotor assembly (28,30) about two axes, a separate actuator is provided for each axis of gearbox pivoting. The resultant machine (20) is easy to operate, lightweight, and exhibits little risk of high-pressure fluid spills.

    • A water supply system (30) is adapted to spray lubricant, typically water, onto an asphalt surface in front of an asphalt vibratory plate machine (20) at a generally constant rate regardless of the level of lubricant in the system's storage tank (44) and regardless of machine inclination. The water is routed to a nozzle assembly (46) of the water supply system through a pump (48) that is preferably driven by the exciter (54) of the asphalt vibratory plate machine (20). The pump (48) is configured to provide adequate pressure with minimal increase in the machine's overall weight, complexity, or manufacturing expense. The nozzle assembly (46) includes a spray bar (170) which is configured to spray water uniformly across the entire compaction path but which is shorter than the baseplate (50) of the machine so as to avoid snagging on neighboring obstructions.

    • A fluid level sensor comprises a parallel plate capacitor coupled to an integrated circuit located in the bottom of an oil pan or other receptacle in which fluid level is being sensed. The sensor is preferably mounted on a drain plug for the receptacle. It includes an integrated circuit board encapsulated in a potting material disposed within the drain plug and a probe extending upwardly from the integrated circuit with its lower end also encapsulated with a resin such that its leads are protected by the resin encapsulating the integrated circuit. The probe may include one or more slotted plates in which capacitance bridges are formed within the slots or a plurality of parallel plates in which capacitance bridges are formed between adjacent plates. The sensor can be used to control operation of a gauge and/or an ignition control circuit for the machine's engine.

    • A portable vibratory screed machine is configured with a vibration restraint operable to reduce undesirable vibration of the engine and to extend the life of the engine. The portable vibratory screed machine includes a machine frame (35) having a reference structure. The machine further includes an engine (30) mounted on the reference structure via a mount that surrounds a drive shaft that is driven by the engine's output. A vibratory assembly remotely located from the engine is powered by the engine to vibrate a screed plate. The vibration restraint (20) directly couples the engine housing to the reference structure at a location that is spaced apart from the mount.
