摘要： This invention is an artificial airway device used to facilitate lung ventilation in an unconscious patient; and methods for using and inserting an artificial airway device. The device includes a curved but flexible airway tube, and mask portion. A mask opening portion is shaped so as to fit closely over the laryngeal openin. A seating tip includes a series of thin, flexible fins which project from a finger portion extending from the mask opening portion. The fins seat against the pharyngeal side of the cricoid, just above the esophagus. The mask portion can be anchored against a relatively hard surface without causing damage to delicate tissue in the esophagus. The tip provides a reference during insertion which ensures that the mask portion is properly in place, and adequately anchored. The airway also includes an inflatable cuff used to anchor the artificial airway in place. During insertion, the seating tip is fed into the pharynx adjacent the cricoid. When resistance is felt due to interaction between the tip and the cricoid, insertion is halted. The artificial airway is then pulled back slightly to lift the epiglottis away from the mask opening and so that the cuff is just behind the uvula. The cuff is then inflated. The patient may then be ventilated.

摘要： A blood collection syringe of the present invention minimizes contact of the blood during and after collection with extraneous gases. In a preferred embodiment of a syringe (20) of the present invention, a plunger tip (22) is mounted on a plunger (40) positioned in a syringe barrel (24). The plunger tip (22) includes a hollow sealing member (42) having leading (44) and trailing members (52) with a resilient wall (60) extending therebetween. An interior chamber is defined by the wall (60), the leading (44), and trailing members (52). Circumferential sealing rings extend from the leading and trailing member for sealing engagement with the syringe barrel. At least one slit (66) is formed in and extends through the leading member. When the plunger (40) is fully extended into the syringe barrel (24), the resilient wall (60) collapses so that the leading (44) and trailing members (52) of the plunger tip (22) become positioned near each other at the head of the syringe barrel and the volume of the interior chamber is minimized.

The apparatus includes a fluid inlet coupling a fluid flow into a liquid chamber, a fluid outlet protruding into the liquid chamber, and a flow diversion member proximal to the fluid outlet. The flow diversion member configured to block a direct flow between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet. The apparatus includes a hydrophobic membrane separating a portion of the liquid chamber from an outer chamber and a gas venting valve fluidically coupling the outer chamber with the atmosphere.
