After the device is switched on, the water present in the reservoir is heated to the boiling point. After detection of the boiling point, the control unit determines a maximum temperature at a predetermined distance below the boiling point and the water in the reservoir is then maintained at a desired temperature which is not higher than the determined maximum temperature.

The control unit is provided with a timer having time adjustment means with which, at least in the case of one of the batches, the delivery of control signals by the control unit is delayed over an adjustable period after one of the probes has been reached.
