      where:

      X 1 is H or an amino acid residue of cysteine (Cys) having L or D configuration, wherein each pair of amino acid residues of Cys, optionally present as X 1 , can be in the form of a cystine residue owing to an -S-S- bridge formed by the -SH functions of two Cys residues,
      X 2 is an amino acid residue of tyrosine (Tyr) or of histidine (His) having L or D configuration,
      X 3 is an amino acid residue of His or Tyr having L or D configuration, provided, however, that X 2 is Tyr when X 3 is His and X 2 is His when X 3 is Tyr,
      His is an amino acid residue of histidine having L or D configuration,
      n is an integer of from 1 to 4,
      R when n is 1, is OH, a residue of a single amino acid, or a peptide chain comprising from 2 to 7 amino acids,

      when n is 2, 3 or 4, it is a group capable of forming a dimer, a trimer and, respectively, a tetramer.

    • A process to purify Big-Endothelin (Big-ET) from crude extracts comprising the steps as follows:

      to express Big-ET protein in host cells using genetic engineering methods;
      to lyse said host cells and to treat them with a proteolytic enzyme in order to obtain a proteolysed extract;
      to load said proteolysed extract to an affinity chromatography column, prepared by immobilizing a Big-ET specific ligand, said ligand comprising Big-ET hydropathically complementary peptides, consisting of D configuration amino acids, said column equilibrated with a suitable saline buffer;
      to wash out the not specifically bonded material from said column by a suitable washing buffer;
      to elute the specifically retained material into said column by a suitable elution buffer.
