    • A daisy wheel printer wherein a non-contacting sensor (24) is employed to detect the rotational position of the daisy wheel (10) by response to the interrupting action of the character stalks (12,14) and to produce a train of pulses providing positional information in accordance with said interrupting action. In accordance with the invention, each stalk of the daisy wheel is divided by a longitudinal slit (26) into two or more branches (28, 30) thereby to increase the frequency of the interrupting action and, for a given rotation of the wheel, to cause the sensor to produce a train of pulses (32) containing a number of pulses which is an integral multiple of the number of stalks passing the sensor.

    • A daisy wheel printer having a daisy wheel (10) with a central disc portion (12) and character stalks (14), wherein a masking disc (20) is attached coaxially to the daisy wheel, said mask being larger than the central disc portion of the wheel so that it obscures the daisy wheel stalks in a radial zone of the wheel inwardly of the character petals (16). The mask (20) is provided with a single slit (26) over the interstice between a unique pair of character stalks (14A, 14B), thereby to define a unique datum or home location on the daisy wheel. This datum slit is detected by means of a light source (28) and light-sensitive detector (30) which emits a pulse each time the datum slit passes through a light beam directed towards said detector at the radial zone of the daisy wheel whereat said datum slit is provided. The invention provides a datum slit enabling optical detection of a datum location on the daisy wheel without in any way affecting the performance of the daisy wheel for printing and, in particular, without affecting the flexibility of the character stalks.

    • A ribbon cassette for use with a printer or typewriter for housing an inked or carbon ribbon or the like in which a ribbon guide, normally mounted on the typewriter or printer, is formed as an integral but movable part of the cassette with the ribbon permanently threaded therethrough.
      In a preferred embodiment the ribbon guide comprises a loop (30) at the end of the wire arm (36. 32), the remote end of which is embedded at (38) in the cassette. Another aspect of the invention concerns the provision of a daisy wheel petal guide (22) between opposed ends (20 and 18) of two arms (12 and 14) of the cassette which in part define a ribbon path with the ribbon stretched across the gap.
      The invention also includes a typewriter which is adapted to receive a cassette having the above characteristics and which includes an actuator 112 in the typewriter for engaging the arm 36 to move the ribbon guide as required.

    • A holder (A or C) for an article (B or D) can be used on a display device at the point of sale, and as part of a rack of similar holders by the user.     • An impact printer such as a typewriter, of the kind wherein the printing surface is impacted by the type face (14A) through an impregnated ribbon (16) under the drive of a hammer (18), wherein a rebound mechanism (20) is provided to absorb the kinetic energy present in the hammer when it rebounds after imprint, this mechanism comprising a pivotted rebound arm (22) driving a ratchet device (28, 30) which is coupled to a ribbon feed wheel (32) in order to increment the ribbon. The rebound mechanism may alternatively be operated by rebound energy derived from a prime mover which actuates another movable part of the printer, such as a carriage escapement mechanism, with an impulse drive. The invention is especially aimed at a low cost printer adapted for battery operation, and enables the use of a separate actuator for ribbon increment to be avoided.
