摘要： A jacket for a scalpel is provided. A disposable scalpel has an elongated body with a base wall and two sidewalls forming a scalpel channel, and a blade assembly having a blade coupled to a slider, the slider structured to move the blade between a first, retracted position and second, extended position. The jacket includes a body having an elongated base wall and two sidewalls. Each sidewall extends generally perpendicular to the jacket base wall, thereby defining a jacket channel. The jacket sidewalls are spaced apart a sufficient distance so that the scalpel may be disposed between the jacket sidewalls. The jacket further includes a trap structured to hold the scalpel in the jacket channel.

The surgical blade device allows the user to replace a blade assembly during surgery or, after sterilization of the handle and replacement of the blade assembly, reuse the surgical blade device. The surgical blade device disclosed herein further provides for an inexpensive blade assembly replacement device which is simple to operate. That is, the blade replacement device has a limited number of components.

The device further includes cooperating locking members (60, 63) on the handle and the body to position the surgical blade member in the desired position. An associated method of performing a surgical procedure is also disclosed.
