    • A bone-stiffness measuring instrument comprises a set or kit of readily assembled and adjusted components, namely a goniometer (16), a light-weight load cell (15), and a small computer package (22), adapted to continuously respond to the outputs of the load cell and goniometer and to display and/or record (i.e., store) measured stiffness data; plus hardware in duplicate, namely, a bone-screw clamp (18, 20) and bracket for fixed reference to bone-screws that are externally exposed on each of the respective sides of the fracture (following removal of an external fixator), a stiff arcuate arm member of radius at least twice the diameter of the fractured bone, and a goniometer-end mount. The arcuate arm member is adjustably fixed to the bracket for bone-screw reference, and the goniometer-end mount is also adjustably fixed to the arcuate arm member, with a releasably lockable-ball-joint connection for adjusted orientation of an end mounting to the goniometer.

    • A mechanism having a particular application as a bone fixator for the fixation of two substantially co-linear members (A, B), which enables the controlled pivotal motion of the two members (2, 3) in two axes. The mechanism includes a dual axis hinge (1) having two members (2, 3) that are pivotally connectable by engageable pivots (6, 7) at each end of the members (2, 3), such that the members (2, 3) may pivot with respect to each other when one of the engageable pivots is engaged and the other pivot is released. The mechanism also includes an attachable elongate column (8) having a plurality of clamps (9), to each of which is affixed a bar (10) holding a further clamp (11) which affixes a bone screw (12). The bone screws (12) are attached to different portions of the substantially co-linear members (A, B), which may be, for example, a broken bone. The mechanism may also be used to encourage free and controlled cyclic bending centred on each pivot (6, 7) when the clamps (9, 11) at either end of each of the bars (10) are released.

    • A ferroresonant transformer comprises a core, a main shunt, first windings, second windings, and third windings. The main shunt arranged relative to the core to define a primary side and a secondary side of the ferroresonant transformer. The first windings are arranged on the primary side of the ferroresonant transformer and are operatively connected to the primary power source. The second windings are arranged on the secondary side of the ferroresonant transformer and are operatively connected to the secondary power source. The third windings are arranged on the secondary side of the ferroresonant transformer and are operatively connected to the resonant capacitor. When a primary signal is present on the first windings, a first output signal is present on at least a portion of the third windings. When a secondary power is present on the second windings, a second output signal is present on at least a portion of the third windings.
