    • A drilling machine ( fig 1 ) is provided for breaking chips formed by drilling action into manageable lengths. The drilling machine comprises a first gear (52) having a first axis of rotation, and a cam follower surface (216). It has a second gear (42) having a second axis of rotation coincident with the first axis of rotation. A housing (22) is provided configured to support the first gear (52) and the second gear (42), the housing having a cam surface (214), a spring (212) and a tool holder spindle (28) having a third axis of rotation (A). The first and second gears (52,42) are configured to impart both a linear feed and a rotation to the spindle (28). The first and second axes of rotation are coincident with the third axis of rotation (A) such that the cam surface (214) is urged into contact with the cam follower surface (216) by the spring (220). The cam surface (214) and the follower surface (216) are shaped such that when the first gear (52) rotates, the first gear (52) is caused repeatedly to retract and then to advance, breaking chips that are formed.
