    • An apparatus and a method for forming a block (5) of folded material are provided, whereby the apparatus comprises means (2, 3) for folding a web (4) to a block (5), means (10) for holding an end (7, 7') of the web (4) from the bottom layer of the block (5) and an automatic cutting mechanism (9, 11, 13) for providing an end portion (14) from the uppermost layer of the block (5). According to the method a web (4) on a receiving element (6) is folded until a portion of the web (4) forms a block (5) of desired height and the uppermost web layer is fed to a cutting mechanism (9, 11, 13). Then the uppermost web layer is cut and the end portion (7, 7') from the bottom layer of the block (5) is at least partly laid on top of the block (5). Due to the inventive apparatus and method it is possible to automatically handle web material for forming a block without manual operation, which is particularly important for hygienic products.

    • A block formation system for forming a block of folded material, preferably of nonwoven material or tissue, comprising a folding means (11, 12) between which web material (10) is passing for folding the web material (10) to a block (50), and pressing means (17, 20) acting on the block (50). The block of web material (10) is layered on a lifting element (24) being movable relative to the folding means (11, 12), whereby means for controlling the relative movement of the lifting element (24) to the folding means (11, 12) with respect to the degree of compression of the block (50) are provided. The block formation system can be used for high-speed festooning with high quality requirements. According to the proposed method for controlling the folding of a block, web material (10) is fed to a folding device (11, 12), web material (10) is folded in a zigzag-like manner, building a block (50) of folded material on a lifting element (24), whereby pressing means act on the uppermost web layer and the degree of compression is measured and used for controlling the relative movement of the lifting element (24) with respect to the pressing means (17, 20).

    • A package unit, in particular for tissue or nonwoven fabric, comprising a web (1), which is folded back and forth to form blocks (2, 4, 8) with zig-zag layers, whereby the fold edges (3) are perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the web (1) and form the front or back side of a block (2, 4, 8), and the first block (2) being connected to a second block (4) by a continuous portion (5) of the web (1). Further, the beginning (6) of the web (1) of the first block (2) is connected to the web end (7) of a further block (4, 8) to form one integral package unit. This embodiment allows to provide a compact package unit containing a web of great length ready for transport and further processing at the user.
