摘要： An optical fiber coupler array capable of providing multiple low loss, high coupling coefficient interfaces between a predetermined number of low numerical aperture optical fibers and an optical waveguide device with at least a corresponding number of waveguide interfaces. The novel coupler array includes a plurality of coupler inner cores and a plurality of corresponding coupler outer cores, within a medium surrounding each plural outer core, and also includes a first end for interfacing with plural optical fibers and a second enό for interfacing with a plurality of waveguide interfaces of an optical waveguide device. The sizes of the inner and outer cores are gradually reduced from the first end to the second end in accordance with at least one predetermined reduction profile. Various parameters, such as refractive indices and sizes of the inner and outer cores and the medium (as well as the reduction profile) are selected to produce a plurality of low numerical aperture waveguides at the first end, and a plurality of high numerical aperture waveguides at the second end, while advantageously minimizing insertion loss and maximizing the coupling coefficient at each end. Advantageously, the novel coupler array may be fabricated as an array of individually drawn couplers from multiple parallel fused performs (arranged in a row, or in another geometric cross section). Alternately, the novel coupler array may be fabricated from a single perform (glass or polymer) embedded with a plurality of parallel inner and outer core sets.

摘要： A chiral laser apparatus (10) comprises a layered structure configured to produce a photonic stop band, the layered structure including an upper chiral material layer (14), a middle excitable light-emitting layer (12), and a lower chiral material layer (16) and an excitation source (22) that, when applied to the layered structure, causes the middle light-emitting layer (12) to emit electromagnetic radiation, such that polarized lasing at a lasing wavelength occurs in a direction perpendicular to the layered structure. The middle light-emitting layer (12) may be configured to produce a defect such that lasing advantageously occurs at a wavelength corresponding to a localized photonic state within the photonic stop band. The excitation source (22) may be an electrical power source connected to the layered structure via two or more electrodes (18, 20).

摘要： A defect causing a localized state is induced in a chiral structure (12) composed of multiple chiral elements (20, 22) by twisting one element of the chiral structure with respect to the other elements along a common longitudinal axis such that directors of the element molecular layers that are in contact with one another at contact area (26) are disposed at a particular 'twist' angle therebetween, the twist angle being greater than a shift angle between directors of consecutive layers. The chiral twist structure may be utilized in a variety of applications such as filters, lasers and detectors. The defect caused by the twist may be made tunable by providing a tuning device for rotating one or more of the chiral elements with respect to one another to vary the twist angle and thus vary the position of the induced defect within a photonic stop band. Tunable defects may be advantageously utilized to construct tunable wavelength chiral filters, detectors and lasers.

摘要： A long period chiral fiber grating 'LPCFG” that has a number of advantageous properties that can be readily utilized in a number of different applications is provided. The inventive LPCFG (10) is a fiber grating having a pitch that exceeds the wavelength of light propagating therethrough. The LPCFG (10) includes a number of dips in its transmission spectrum, but does not reflect any portion of the signal passing therethrough. The LPCFG is sensitive to changes in the refractive index of its external environment (or in the refractive index of a coating (16) covering the LPCFG cladding (14)). In response to changes in the external refractive index, the transmission dips shift proportionally to changes in the index, thus enabling the use of LPCFG as a fiber sensor element. In addition, the LPCFG is polarization sensitive - one circular polarized wave of one handedness is coupled to the cladding mode stronger than the wave of the other polarization handedness.

摘要： A chiral fiber laser (10) implemented in a fiber Bragg grating mimicking the advantageous optical properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal structure is provided. The dopant, the pitch, the core cross section and dimensions thereof, of the inventive chiral fiber laser (10) as well as the core (14) and cladding (16) materials used in construction thereof, may be advantageously selected and configured to enable the inventive chiral fiber laser (10) to produce lasing at a desirable wavelength. In another embodiment of the inventive chiral fiber laser, a tunable defect is introduced to provide tunable lasing corresponding to the wavelength at the defect mode. Multiple embodiments using coupled fiber optical pumping as well as direct optical pumping for excitation of the inventive chiral fiber laser are provided.

摘要： An apparatus(100) and method for fabricating fiber gratings from optical fibers(114) by imposing constant or variable chiral refractive index modulation along an optical fiber. The refractive index modulation may be of single helix symmetry or of double helix symmetry. In several embodiments of the present invention the refractive index modulation is imposed by twisting and moving a specially prepared optical fiber through a heater(116) that heats a small region of the fiber to a temperature sufficient to allow the fiber to twist in that region as it moves through the heater. Alternately, a normal optical fiber may specially prepared for u se with the apparatus of the present invention at a pre-process stage prior to twisting and heating. In other embodiments of the inventive apparatus, the refractive index modulation is imposed by cutting one or more helical groove patterns into a normal optical fiber, or wrapping a normal fiber with one or more elongated dielectric fibers of a smaller diameter than the optical fiber in one or more helical patterns. Advantageously, the fabrication of the chiral fiber grating may be monitored and the fabrication parameters automatically adjusted to ensure that the chiral fiber grating meets desired requirements.
