    • An awning (10), for example, attached to a vehicle (20), has a sensor (90) responsive to awning acceleration caused by wind impacting the awning. The sensor (90) is arranged to generate a signal having an amplitude which corresponds to the acceleration. When the signal exceeds a predetermined threshold, the awning is retracted. The signal's amplitude may be converted into a frequency, and the frequency compared to the threshold. Typically, the signal should exceed the threshold for a set period of time in order to trigger awning retraction. A second threshold may dictate a maximum instantaneous or peak acceleration. When the signal exceeds this second threshold, regardless of the duration during which the second threshold is exceeded, the awning is retracted.

    • A lateral arm assembly (2) and method of operation includes first and second articulating arms (10) comprising first and second ends, the first ends of the articulating arms (10) are mounted upon assembly to a support surface at separate lateral locations. The first ends each comprise separate pivoting mounting structures (18,32,34) for forming a first pivotal connection with the first and second articulating arms. The lateral arm assembly also comprises a roller tube (6) having spaced lateral ends supporting respective end brackets that provide a second pivotal connection to the second ends of the articulating arms (10). The roller tube (6) supports a canopy (4) coupled to a roller shaft, wherein one of the end brackets further supports a device that drives the roller shaft for furling and unfurling the canopy (4).
