    • An improved internal line up clamp (10) is disclosed which has an integral back up ring (12). A first set of pipe clamps (22) move radially outward to engage the inner surface of a first pipe (14). A second set of pipe clamps (62) and a set of back up ring segments (202) are simultaneously moved radially outward into engagement with the inner surface of the pipes. The back up ring segments (202) are spring loaded to exert a relatively constant back up force against the inner surface of the pipes at the weld. In a modification, a fill block (118) can be used to fill the gap between adjacent back up ring segments when engaging the inner surface of the pipe. The back up ring segments support the shoe elements (220). The shoe elements are spring loaded to accommodate diameter mismatch and non-circularity of the pipe ends. The back up ring segments rotate about a radial axis from the pipe centerline. Tapered ends on the back up ring segments provide for the decrease in ring circumference necessary to lower the ring segments.

    • A welding system includes a welding station having a weld station computer and a weld system in communication with the weld station computer. The weld system includes a supply of weld material, a welding device, and a weld supply motor assembly that moves the weld material to the welder device. The system further includes a weighting device operatively connected with the weld station computer to measure a weight of the supply of weld material and to communicate the weight of the supply of weld material to the weld station computer; and a sensor operatively connected with the weld supply motor assembly and the weld station computer so as to communicate the speed of the weld supply motor assembly to the weld station computer. The weld station computer is operatively connected to the weld supply motor assembly to control the speed of the motor assembly based on the weight data.

    • A line-up clamp unit (20) is powered by a diesel engine (22) which drives a hydraulic pump (80) for operating hydraulic equipment in the unit. The unit includes a line-up clamp (48) which has front shoes (52), rear shoes (50) and expanding copper back-up tiles (54). Drive wheels (38) are deployed by a hydraulic cylinder and operated by a hydraulic drive motor. Brakes are also operated hydraulically. A group (68) of aligning assemblies are electrically operated and function to extend L-shaped members (68a,74a) to beyond the diameter of the pipe (210) being welded so that the unit (20) can be retracted and automatically positioned at the end of a pipe section (210). A control box (76) is mounted to the line-up unit (20) and includes a radio receiver for receiving control signals and producing corresponding electric control commands for operating the hydraulic and electric components of the line-up unit. A remote control radio transmitter (122) has operating mechanisms, including push buttons and toggle switches, for operating the multiple operative elements of the line-up unit, including the engine, drive motor, brakes, line-up clamp and aligners.
