    • An adjustable shoulder anchorage for a vehicle seat belt system comprises a carriage 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, to which a running loop 26 is secured by a bolt 24. The carriage slides on a track 10 and is supported thereon by engagement of flanges 34, 36 of the track in grooves 40, 42 of a slidable operating member 20 of the carriage. Latching arms 16, 18 secure the carriage to the track and are each engageable at both ends 62, 64, 66, 68 with the track. Sliding movement of the operating member in either direction along the track frees the arms from engagement because of co-operation between surfaces (52, 54 in Figures 2 and 3) on the operating member and ramped surfaces 88, 90, 92, 94 on the arms. In modifications, the operating member is in two resiliently-connected parts (120a, 120b in Figure 4) and can take the form of a spring toggle (222, 228, 246 in Figure 5) linking the latching arms.

    • The belt-storage spool 20 of the retractor has mounted on its end face a disc 80 which is rotatable relative to the spool 20 about an axis passing through the centre of mass of the disc. The disc is normally urged into a stationary position relative to the spool by a spring 90 which undergoes a buckling deformation when the disc rotates relative to the spool at spool accelerations at or above a threshold value. This rotation brings a pawl 86 on the disc into engagement with internal ratchet teeth 41 of a lockcup 40 which then rotates with the spool to cause locking of the retractor by engagement of a lockbar 45 with ratchet teeth 25 on the spool. The lockcup 40 is urged into its rest position by a further buckling spring 52. Figures 3 and 4 show modified constructions in which the disc 80 is replaced by elements 100, 120.

    • 0 An adjustable shoulder anchorage for a vehicle safety belt has a guideway (2; 102) along which a carriage (4; 104) supporting a running loop for the belt can be moved between selected positions. The carriage position is sensed by micro- switches (34, 35) co-operating with guideway formations (40, 41, 42) and is indicated by a display device (50) at the vehicle dashboard. In another arrangement, the carriage movement is effected by an electric motor (160) driving a screw-threaded shaft (162) received in a nut secured to the carriage.
      Carriage position is sensed and displayed as before and provision may be made for microprocessor control, with facilities for storing signals representing preferred carriage positions.

    • The seat of Figures 1 to 5 is recline-adjustable by pivotation about a transverse axis at the top of the backrest (24). For adjustment, locking bolts (46) are freed by pulling a handle (39) (Figure 3) or pushing a panel (60) (Figure 4). The seat frames of Figures 2 and 7 are simply constructed, each largely from two lengths of tubing (11), (12) or (111), (112). Figures 6 and 8 shows a seat anchorage arrangement including stirrups (141) receiving a standard adult safety belt (142) and tensionable straps (140). Figures 9 to 11 show a seat in configurations for a small child (Figure 11) and a baby (Figures 9 and 10). Figures 12 to 14 and 17 show a seat which is lifted for pivotal adjustment, eyes (230) receiving a frame rail (213) allowing the adjustment. Figures 15 and 16 show an adjustment device with parallel rails (255) and a clamp (228). Figures 18 to 21 show a seat in configurations similar to Figures 9 to 11. The seat has provision for a three-point harness and has an integral buckle socket with remote release. Figure 22 shows an alarm system (511), (512), (514).

    • Each retractor described includes a belt-sensitive (355,360) and a retractor-sensitive (414) inertial device. The retractor is locked by engagement of a lockbar with ratchet teeth (325) of a belt spool (320). The lockbar is actuated by rotation of a lockcup (340) which is produced by coupling of the lockcup to the spool. The coupling is by engagement of a pawl member (420) of the retractor-sensitive device, which is mounted on a side arm (412) of the lockcup, with ratchet teeth (331), or by engagement of a latchlock (360) acutated by relative rotation between the flywheel (355) and the spool member with internal ratchet teeth of the lockcup. Latchlock actuation is by a camming arrangement or by co-operation of a pin (390) in a slot (394). The retractor-sensitive inertial device is supported on a seating (428) which is a snap-fit on the arm of the lockcup in two or more different orientations selected according to the intended orientation of the retractor in use. Flexural resilient elements e.g. a rectilinear wire (400) and integral parts (420,426) of a plastics lockcup moulding bias parts of the retractors into their normal positions.

    • An adjustable anchorage for the belt of a vehicle seat belt system comprises a support for the belt mounted on a carriage, a track along which the carriage is selectively movable between predetermined positions and detent means releasably holding the carriage in the selected one of the predetermined positions. A single element (16; 56; 96) both carries the belt support (32; 97) and is pushed or otherwise manipulated to release the detent means (4, 19). Moreover, the detent means can be associated with latching means (7, 24; 53, 59) requiring to be unlatched before the carriage can move along the track, the latching means either latching the carriage to the track or latching the detent means. A button (84) can enclose the detent means (4, 72) and is movable to effect release in a direction transverse to the detent means movement. Also, the track (2) has an end (110) at which the carriage can be assembled with it in operative relationship, and means (111) for closure of the track end to prevent subsequent removal of the carriage. The track can be provided by an integral part of the vehicle structure e. g. the B-post.
