    • A method of forming a sheet metal component comprises the steps of initially forming a profiled blank from a metal sheet and then identifying on a surface of the blank, one or more wrinkle lines across which a buckling stress exceeds a critical buckling stress limit.
      Then at least one slot is cut into in the profiled blank, with the or each slot extending entirely through a thickness of the profiled blank and being coincident with one of the wrinkle lines, and a hole is cut at one end of the slot with the hole having a diameter greater than a lateral width of the slot.
      The profiled blank is then processed in a pressing operation to form a shaped blank with one or more welding operations being carried out on the shaped blank along each slot to produce a finished sheet metal component.

    • A lock plate for preventing relative movement between a first component and an adjoining second component, comprises a first end, a second end, and a planar portion extending between the first end and the second end. The first end is located against one of the first component and the second component, while the second end is located against the other one of the first component and the second component. The planar portion comprises a first projection positioned substantially mid-way between the first end and the second end. The first projection protrudes from a plane defined by the planar portion and may readily be severed by a user to thereby separate the first and second component from one another. A corresponding method of dismantling an assembly is also provided.

    • A method is provided of balancing a set of retaining and locking plates (3, 5) used to retain a row of gas turbine engine aerofoil blades (1) in attachment to a rotor disc (7). The method includes: (i) providing a weighing plate (109) having a circular track (115); (ii) providing a non-rotating, static balancing apparatus capable of detecting unbalance in the weighing plate; (iii) positioning the weighing plate on the static balancing apparatus, and positioning the set of retaining and locking plates on the track in an arrangement corresponding to a possible arrangement for the set of plates in use in the engine; and (iv) repositioning the retaining and locking plates on the track to arrive at a balanced arrangement for the set of plates.

    • A method of reducing dynamic imbalance in a bladed rotor assembly (7) by axially adjusting one or more of the blades (2) so as to redistribute mass along the geometric axis of the assembly. The blades may be axially adjusted to form a counterbalancing couple. Additional correction masses (6, 6a) may be added for supplemental correction of couple imbalance or residual static imbalance in the bladed rotor assembly. The invention offers a reduction in the weight penalty associated with conventional balancing corrections carried out on the bladed rotor assembly.
