    • A spindle for a grinding wheel which is to grind re-entrant cams on camshafts is described, comprising a drive motor, a shaft extending from the motor at the end of which is mounted a grinding wheel, and a rigid elongate casing extending from the motor and encasing the shaft. The length of the shaft and casing is selected to be at least as long as the axial length of camshafts to be ground by the wheel. The shaft is carried in three hydrostatic bearings. One bearing is located near the grinding wheel at the end of the rigid casing remote from the motor. The assembly increases the shaft stiffness and its resistance to bending. A second bearing is located at the inboard end of the shaft and the third bearing is located within the motor at the far end of the shaft. The length of the rotor-bearing part is shorter than the external part of the shaft, which is constructed so that the stiffness and the support of the shorter part of the shaft dictate that the bending resonance of the longer external part is above the critical spindle rotational frequency. The motor housing is symmetrical and includes a water cooling jacket in which water to follows a helical path around the motor, to avoid cooling one side of the motor more than another. The spindle is constructed to be axisymmetrical, so that any heat generated within the bearings dissipates radially and uniformly into the surrounding material. Oil is supplied under pressure to the bearings by a pump from a reservoir to which oil returns from the bearings. The oil is heated in each bearing and the heated oil drains into lower regions of the enclosure formed by the shaft casing and motor housing. The lower regions of this enclosure constitute a separate oil collection box mounted so as not to strain the shaft. A thermal barrier is provided between the upper and lower regions of the enclosure. During assembly the internal bores of two of the bearings are initially aligned and the third bearing is adjusted radially to bring all three bores into alignment.

    • A telescopic leg which is adjustable in length comprising three relatively slidable sections. A releasable friction jamming mechanism acts between a pair of the sections whereby one section can be pulled out or pushed into the other section of the pair and secured in position by the jamming mechanism. Relative sliding between one of the pair of sections and a third section permits these two sections to be slid into an extended or a retracted position, and releasable locking means allows these two sections to be secured in either the extended or retracted position. Where the leg sections are of circular cross section relative rotation of one section relative to the other is prevented. The three sections comprise an inner section, slidable in an intermediate section, and an outer section in which the intermediate section is slidable and the friction jamming means is mounted at the lower end of the outer section to lock the intermediate section at any desired position relative to the outer section. The releasable locking means acts between the intermediate and inner sections. The inner section includes a hinged foot at one end. The three sections are of similar length, and the inner section is prevented from fully leaving the intermediate section, and it is prevented from fully leaving the outer section. The friction jamming means includes a spring loaded apertured lever which is biased into jamming engagement by the spring and is released from that engagement by lifting up (or pressing down) the lever against the action of the spring so that the lever becomes perpendicular to the leg section.An angler's bed-chair can be fitted with two pairs of multiple section legs one pair on each side of a central section on which an angler will normally sit. The jamming lever is located within a housing having an opening in one face to give access to the lever.The housing surrounds the leg section in the region of the lever. The latter can be wholly contained within the housing so that the it cannot be operated accidentally nor protrude so as to catch on clothing or cause injury.     • A reader for checking magnetically encoded security thread incorporated or to be incorporated into sheet material comprises a housing which includes a magnetic reading head, a rotary member which is rotatable by frictional engagement either with a surface of the thread or of sheet material containing the thread to be checked, and an encoder, coupled to the rotary member, for providing electrical signal indicating units of relative movement between the housing and the surface, in synchronism with electrical signals from the reading head. The housing may be portable for manual movement over the thread and includes circuit means including an ADC responsive to electrical signals from the magnetic reading head to decode same and provide signals indicative of the magnetic pattern detected by the magnetic reading head, for comparison with signals stored in a memory, a second memory in which a signal comparison algorithm is stored, a microprocessor operating in accordance with the comparison algorithm to compare the stored data with the digital signals from the ADC to produce an output signal indicative of the result of the comparison. A mean unit of length as computed from the second length is compared with stored data relating to the true unit length for the thread, to determine if the scanned thread has suffered stretch or is otherwise not within the specification for the thread.

    • A method of heating a building in which a boiler provides hot water for circulating through radiators in the building and a condensing heat exchanger recovers heat from the boiler flue gases. Air entering the building is heated by an additional heat exchanger through which water flows which has been heated by the condensing heat exchanger. Cold air supplied to the combustion chamber is also employed to cool the flue gases. The condensing heat exchanger comprises a first exchanger in which the hot flue gases are cooled to a temperature above the dew point and a second in which the previously cooled flue gases are cooled to below the dew point. The second exchanger includes a primary water circuit which cools water in a secondary circuit, in which water is in contact with the flue gases and the secondary circuit water passes through a heat exchanger in an air inlet to the building. Some of the water returning from the radiators is cooled before supply to the primary circuit. A building and heating system comprises a boiler which provides a source of hot water, a pump for circulating the hot water through radiators in the building, a condensing heat exchanger which recovers heat from the boiler flue gases, and in which water which has been heated in the condensing heat exchanger is employed to heat air entering the building.

    • A method of monitoring the wear of a grinding wheel (10) comprises the steps of measuring the force exerted between the wheel and a workpiece (26), measured normal to the grinding face of the wheel at the point of contact between the wheel and workpiece, and generating a warning signal when the measured force exceeds a predetermined threshold value. A signal indicative of the normal grinding force is obtained by measuring the force exerted by a wheelfeed drive (18) which in use urges the wheel into grinding engagement with the workpiece. Where the wheelfeed drive includes an electrically powered motor, the torque developed by the motor will be proportional to the normal force between the wheel and workpiece. This in turn is proportional to the electrical power drawn by the motor during operation, so an indication of the force between wheel and workpiece is obtained by measuring the power demand made by the motor on its power supply. The value of the force proportional signal obtained while grinding a workpiece is compared with a corresponding value obtained during the grinding of a preceding similar workpiece, and a warning signal is generated if a current grinding force signal value differs from a preceding grinding force signal value by more than a predetermined amount. Mean force values may be computed during each of a succession of workpiece grinds on similar components and the value for a current workpiece can be compared with the mean value for a plurality of preceding workpiece grinds. Alternatively the peak value of the normal grinding force signal value during a current grind may be compared with a predetermined value to generate a warning signal.
