    • A system for monitoring a process controlled by a user. A code generated by user input is paired with a code generated by the process in response to the user generated code. With reference to a master profile of code pairs, in the form of a variable file or look-up table, it is established whether the pair of codes are recognised as an appropriate pairing. In the case that the process generated code has not been recognized a false context state is established and, in the case in which a process generated code has been recognised, either a true context state is established if the recognised process generated code is deemed to have been produced in an appropriate context having regard to a correlation between the user generated input code and the corresponding code of the code master profile pair associated with the recognised process code, else a false context state is established. A raw activity record then stores an activity code specific to each recognised process generated code and the associated determined context state. The activity record may then be used as a basis for influencing the progress of the process.

    • Vertical surface protection in a security installation is achieved by detecting disturbances in a microwave beam sent from a transmitter (30) to a receiver (31). The transmitter and receiver have associated beam aerials of extended horizontal aperture of not less than 0.50 metres (20 inches) to mitigate the effects of surface reflection from metal scaffold, plastic sheeting or netting, wooden boarding and brick or stone facing. The aerials are preferably slotted waveguide arrays and the advantages of using circular polarization are shown. Circularly-polarized slotted waveguide arrays are disclosed having a centre feed to minimize frequency dependent beam-spreading. The sensor may be used with an intruder detector (64) (to protect buildings in scafford) utilising triple technology exterior detection incorporating: microwave Doppler shift; at least one and preferably two passive infra-red devices linked together through timers and lens with horizontal curtains pattern; and anti-sabotage reflected active infra-red. The system can combine the aforementioned technologies into a new device and in this format mounted on scaffold overcomes the individual limitations of each of the prior art technologies when use in unison in an external scaffold environment.

    • A frequency surveillance method for monitoring background atmospheric noise levels in unoccupied channels in an operating frequency band of a high frequency communication system. In the method, the unoccupied channels are scanned a number of times to obtain analogue signals. The obtained signals are transformed to a digital form and averaged. The averaged digital signals are filtered to remove substantially all radio frequency interference. Absolute signals are then produced by scaling or comparing the filtered signals with a known noise level. The background noise levels are obtained by further averaging the absolute signals. A visual display unit is used to display the background noise levels as functions of frequencies. A frequency surveillance apparatus is also disclosed.
