    • An apparatus and method for detecting friction characteristics are disclosed, in which a wheel resonant system includes a vehicle body, a road surface and at least a wheel. A braking force control system exerts a braking force on the wheel. A resonant component detector determines a resonant gain providing the ratio between the amplitude of predetermined frequency component of the braking force and that of the wheel velocity and detects the ratio of the resonant gain to a present reference gain, a deviation calculator calculates the deviation between this ratio and unity, a PI controller controls the braking force control system in such a manner that the deviation coincides with zero, and a friction characteristics detector detects the friction characteristics on the basis of the braking force. When the friction force is made to approach a peak value by increasing the braking force, the resonant characteristics undergo a change thereby to reduce the resonant gain. By controlling the braking force in such a manner that the deviation coincides with zero, therefore, the friction characteristics are held at a peak value. This braking force reflects the friction characteristics, and therefore the friction characteristics between the road surface and the wheel can be accurately detected according to the relative magnitude of the braking force.

    • An electrical connector (10) includes a dielectric housing (12) mounting a plurality of terminals (20). The housing has a front face (26a) and a mating portion (28) projecting forwardly of the front face with contact portions (58) of the terminals located on the mating portion. A conductive shield (16) is disposed about at least a portion of the housing and includes a flange (62) abutting the front face (26a) of the housing and a shroud (66) surrounding the mating portion (28) of the housing. Complementary interengaging retaining portions are provided between the housing and the shield to properly retain the shield on the housing, including a recess (72, 80) in the flange (62) of the shield (16) and a boss (44, 44a) projecting forwardly from the front face (26a) of the housing (12) into the recess.

    • This invention relates to an improvement in a fluorescent display on which a desired image is displayed by applying in a vacuum electrons from a field electron emission element to a fluorescent layer, and more particularly to a structure of a fluorescent layer and method of forming the same, and a vacuum sealed structure, vacuum sealing method and vacuum level accelerating method for the space in the display. The fluorescent layer is formed out of a fluorescent body and glass of a low melting point serving as a bonding agent thereof. A method of forming the fluorescent layer consists of the steps of applying paste, which is composed of a mixture of, for example, powder of a fluorescent material, powder of glass of a low melting point and a binder, to a substrate, and baking the substrate at a temperature not lower than the melting point of the glass referred to above. Solder is used as a sealing means for the space in the display, and a sealing method therefor consists, for example, of the steps of placing a display body with its discharge port facing downward on a stand in a vacuum chamber, and thermally melting spherical solder, which is placed between the stand and the discharge port, so as to pack the solder in the discharge port. To obtain a means for increasing a vacuum level, thin film of getter material is formed on the inner surface of the above-mentioned space. The air in this space is removed and the space is sealed, a laser beam being then applied to the getter material to evaporation-revive the same.
